April 2025
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your April issue. It’s lovely to have longer daylight hours now, as well as an increasing number of spring flowers. I especially love bluebells and look forward to seeing them every year; I don’t think I’m alone in this.
As always, your Flyer is packed with local news and things to do, including details about the Easter services at Great St Marys Church and the Tidy Up Sawbridgeworth Great British Spring Clean (12th April). The Mayor tells us about the annual town meeting (21st April), where residents can meet their local councillors and interact with a number of community organisations.
Sawbridgeworth Community Library has news about the Needles and Pins Craft Group (first and third Thursdays of the month), reminds us that Hertfordshire Libraries is celebrating its centenary this year (more on this in future issues) and that a printer, computers and photocopier are available which may help you with return labels for postage and more.
A new Community Art Group meets on Monday mornings at the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall -local artists of all abilities can come together and enjoy creative time. The Hall has three additional exercise / movement classes for different ages and needs, making a huge choice of classes in total. Additionally, a Rivers 300 Celebration Study Day (26th April) offers a chance to dig into the history of the great Rivers Nursery and ends with a guided walk in the restored Heritage Orchard. An Adults Art Competition is ahead too – entry details from April.
With VE Day 80 on Thursday 8th May Sawbridgeworth Local History Society has two events this month – the publication of their new book High Wych and Sawbridgeworth in World War 2 and speaker Richard Knight, who will be talking about ‘Weapons and Uniforms of World War 2’ on Thursday 24th April. The Society will also be arranging a display in the Town Council Offices during VE Day week and would be pleased to hear from anyone who can help, has information or items that they could loan. Thanks to Town Clerk Chris there’s a roundup of the town’s VE Day 80th Anniversary event (8th May) in his Clerk’s Corner.
Back again for 2025 the Sawbridgeworth May Fayre (4th May) has free entry, with something for everyone. Information about visiting or booking a stall is in your magazine. Other local events include the Ash Valley Quilters show in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall (17th and 18th of May) with displays, sales and refreshments to purchase. The Big Breakfast (31st May) will be in Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, where the local churches have joined together to organise this event with a minimum donation of £5 (cash only) to Christian Aid.
Corinne Lewis, the founder of Repair Café Sawbridgeworth and Tidy up Sawbridgeworth (TUS) – part of Sustainable Sawbridgeworth – was delighted to have the work of these two organisations recognised as Green Champions at a recent awards ceremony. A fantastic achievement. The next Repair Café is on the 24th May. Do look inside for details!
Also, we have an informative article from the Hundred Parishes Society – and why not take a look at the Society’s free self-guided walking routes on their website? Thank you for your support and enjoy any chocolate you may have during Easter; I’m sure we will in my household!
With best wishes
