Letter from the Editor for Sawbridgeworth January
As we start this brand new year I hope your copy of the January Flyer will be a useful place for practical information and community updates, to take you through this first month of 2023 and beyond. After what may have been a very busy end to last year, why not take a little time out to read your issue, perhaps with a warm drink?
Sawbridgeworth Community Library
This month we hear from about free ‘Tea & Read’ sessions at Sawbridgeworth Community Library, residents can pop in whenever the library is open, have a cuppa and warm up, as well as read books, magazines and newspapers and use the wi-fi. The library also hosts digital skills workshops, baby rhyme time, children’s storytime and book clubs.
The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society
Updates from local groups this month includes a round up from The Sawbridgeworth Local History Society, with news about a visit to a former WWII airbase RAF Sawbridgeworth, looking for what was once a 43 acre site with three runways, defence emplacements and battle headquarters. Mark Smith of the Antiques Road Show then returned for the Society’s final event of 2022. Sawbridgeworth WI share news about knitting and crocheting over 160 adult hats for the homeless, which have now been distributed to charities. You can also find out what happens at a WI meeting in this issue too. Both groups would be pleased to welcome you to a meeting; their details are inside.
Sawbo Sessions January
In memory of Maddy Kelly and Dawn Gibson Sawbo Sessions will take place on Saturday 25th February, 7.30pm at The Memorial Hall in Sawbridgeworth. It will be an event to make them proud and to continue to raise money for the cancer charities that meant so much to them.
Sawbridgeworth Events January
There are other local events ahead too. These include fitness classes, cinema nights, jazz nights and more, at the Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall. The Wassail event at Rivers Orchard is on Saturday 14th January between 6pm and 7.30pm. Mulled cider, apple juice, savoury snacks and the singing of Wassail songs by the light of a bonfire; sounds a real community event.
Repair Café Sawbridgeworth
Another Repair Café will take place on the 21st January, this follows a previous one in November. Inside you can find out what happens and what to expect if you go. I attended the November event and came away with jewellery having been repaired, a warm welcome and some fascinating conversations, a hot drink and a scone and admiration for all involved, volunteering their time and skills for the community. There’s also a Community Eco Café on Saturday 28th January. Both these events are run by Sustainable Sawbridgeworth, why not find out more inside?
School Updates
In school updates Leventhorpe students, staff and supporters have raised over £9,200 during their annual Charity Week. Planned by the Sixth Form Enterprise students, this year’s charity was the President’s Sporting Club and Essex Disabled Sports Foundation. What a fantastic achievement by all involved!
Sawbridgeworth Sports Association
There’s also news this month about a centenary lunch that recently took place for the Sawbridgeworth Sports Association, to recognise the contribution of Sir Arthur Cutforth in establishing permanent playing facilities for bowls, cricket, football and tennis at Town Fields and Crofters. Sir Arthur’s contribution is recognised on a plaque on the Council Offices in Sayesbury Manor. It’s a fascinating read.
You are always welcome to send in your community news and thank you very much for your continued support.
With best wishes
