Martlesham Council

Mr Frank Bright MBE 1928 -2023

The Council was sad to learn of the death of Mr Frank Bright MBE, who died aged 94 on 16th August 2023. He was a Holocaust and Auschwitz survivor who lived in Martlesham Heath.

His MBE was awarded for his work in educating young people in the history of the holocaust as a frequent visitor to schools.

He kindly allowed the community orchard to be known as Bright’s Orchard and was present at the plantings of the various stages and at the opening ceremony. He greatly enjoyed watching and speaking with the volunteers carrying out this work, many of whom were from Gorseland School and Nursery. As an horticulturalist in Prague before the war he was able to appreciate the finer points of the orchard project.

His family was from Germany who moved to Prague before the second world war, but that did not save them as the Nazis later occupied Czechoslovakia resulting in the family being sent to Auschwitz. As a fit young man he was not murdered but was set to work as an enslaved labourer helping the German war effort. He, like many others like him, took every opportunity to sabotage their factories.

Miraculously he survived this experience, returned to Prague at the end of the war and came to the UK as a refugee to live with distant relatives. He obtained professional qualifications as a civil engineer and became a valuable member of society in this country and in Canada. He married Cynthia and raised a family of two children.

While living in Martlesham he also became a member of the Aviation Society and was particularly prominent in the work to uncover and renovate the underground shelter near the control tower.

Perhaps the best way to commemorate Mr. Bright is to cherish the orchard and use it as an opportunity to educate future generations in environmental protection and the Holocaust.
