Martlesham Council May edition

Result of Uncontested Election for Parish Councillors

On Thursday 6th April we were informed by East Suffolk Council that the two Martlesham Wards will not be contested and there will not be a poll.

However, there are elections for District Councillors so don’t forget to vote on Thursday 4th May! For the first time photographic ID is a requirement when voting. For more details on this go to https://www.electoralcommission.org.uk/i-am-a/voter/voter-id/ or call their helpline on 0800 328 0280.

Your newly elected parish councillors from Thursday 4th May are:

Martlesham Parish Ward: Chris Blundell, Laurence Burrows, Helen Davey, Jane Hall, Mike Irwin, Ian O’Brien Baker, Richard Staines, Edward Thompson, Paul Whitby & Mike Williamson.

Martlesham West Parish Ward: There were no valid nominations received by ESC.

Therefore 10 out of the 14 seats have been filled and we are left with 4 vacancies: 3 in Martlesham Ward and 1 in Martlesham West Ward. The Council is quorate overall and therefore the vacancies may be filled by co-option.  This means that, if you thought of standing but didn’t get around to it, there is still an opportunity to become a councillor!  The new Parish Council will be in a position to co-opt at its first meeting on Wednesday 10th May. Please contact the Clerk for further details.  You will need to verify that you are eligible to stand as a parish councillor and explain briefly why you wish to become a councillor.

Farewell to Parish Councillor David Boswell

Martlesham Council would like to thank David Boswell, who did not put himself forward for election this time, for his contribution to the parish since his co-option in July 2020. We are grateful for his input into the Finance & General Purposes Committee and his work as the PC’s Director on the Martlesham Heath Householders Ltd Committee.

Tree of the Month – the Coronation Oak

The Coronation Oak, an English oak (Quercus robur), is just a 6’ sapling at the moment, can be found at the Recreation Ground near to the Treebilee Oak planted to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee. Martlesham Council is hugely grateful to John Burges, one of Martlesham’s tree wardens, who planted this and who will be helping to make sure it gets off to a good start by regularly watering it and routinely checking on its condition.
