Martlesham Council

Happy New Year to all our residents!

The New Year is an opportunity to reflect on the year gone by and to approach the year ahead with purpose and intention.

For Martlesham Council, 2024 was a challenging but successful one. Below is a list of some of the Council’s achievements in 2024:

  • Martlesham Community Speed Watch was established with new equipment purchased for their use.
  • Trees were protected, maintained, surveyed and cared for. The Council Tree Wardens were also able to facilitate new tree planting across Martlesham Parish.
  • Councillors represented residents at forums and external organisations such as the Brightwell Lakes Forum, the Community Partnership, the Deben Estuary Partnership and the Inter-Parish Green Infrastructure Group,
  • Councillors responded to circa 100 planning applications as well as significant consultations such as the proposed A12 Major Road Network Scheme.
  • The Council facilitated another highly successful Village Fête which was greatly enjoyed by all those who attended.
  • The Council helped local organisations by awarding grants to Martlesham Conservation Group, Headway Suffolk, the Greenways Project, the Suffolk Wildlife Trust, Martlesham Bowls Club, Martlesham Heath Aviation Society, Martlesham in Bloom, Martlesham Brass and Martlesham Heath Householders Ltd.
  • The Council acquired the new Runway Heritage carpark near the Village Green.
  • The Council held a successful and enjoyable second volunteer ‘thank you’ event, inviting over 40 Council volunteers to celebrate their achievements.
  • The Council maintained and enhanced its play areas, play equipment and Recreation Ground and contributed to the maintenance of the Village Green and the underpasses near Tesco and Black Tiles.
  • Conservation work was carried out on Martlesham Common Local Nature Reserve.

Martlesham Council would like to thank all the volunteers who have contributed so much to the work of the Council throughout 2024. If you were all paid for one hour per week, this would equate to expenditure in the region £30.000, so thank you for all you do and will continue to do in 2025!

2025 promises to be a very exciting and successful year as we welcome new Parish Clerk, Lisa Burgess in January, and hope to welcome more new councillors too!

Trees of the Month January 2025

New Trees for a New Year!

This tree planting season, Martlesham Council has planted two new trees on the land adjacent to the Community Hall (Prunus avium, sweet cherry and Malus sylvestris, crab apple). The trees were planted to complete the Council’s project to plant a selection of trees to commemorate the Coronation of King Charles 111 on 6th May 2023. They were selected for the variety of bark, blossom and autumn colour they provide as well as their value to wildlife. The cost of the trees was covered by a generous grant from Deben Rotary.

Please bear with us if we are not as quick as usual to respond to enquiries. We are currently without a Parish Clerk following the retirement of Diane Linsley in the summer.

Councillors and staff are working very hard on behalf of all residents to cover her duties as well as their own work until such time as a new Clerk can be appointed.
