Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your new season Flyer. We hope September – and beyond – goes well for everyone in education and perhaps this could be the ideal time to participate in activities and events taking place this autumn?
You can find out more inside about local events and community updates. Library activities coming up at Hoddesdon include Saturday Stories; LEGO club; a monthly Family Fun event (19th September) and a CreatorSpace event to make customised cards and there are activities at Harlow library such as seated exercise classes on Mondays; a daytime poetry group on the second Friday of every month; Saturday Storytime and Craft sessions and Read, Speak, and Chat for English Learners on Friday mornings. A girls-only hub in Waltham Cross for 14-17 year olds takes place every Wednesday evening at the Active Local Hub, Waltham Cross. It’s free to attend and run by Active Local Waltham Cross. At Hoddesdon Music Club there are several concerts happening over autumn, with the first one on Saturday 19th September. We also have a reminder, from last month’s magazine, about the St Elizabeth’s AppleFest on the 26th September!
There’s a once a year opportunity to step inside Myddelton House – the lifelong home of esteemed botanist Edward Augustus Bowles as part of the National Open House scheme (19th September). Take a free tour with the E.A.Bowles Society who will be on hand to share its history and fascinating facts. Plus, there’s a Roydon Country walk in this issue with plenty of points of interest along the five-mile route and we also have artist Jade telling us about the River Lea Art Trail, which really sounds worth exploring!
Up until November there are free Tai Chi and Health Qigong sessions running in the grounds of Lee Valley White Water Centre (in wet weather sessions will take place inside). These are delivered by Lee Valley Regional Park Authority and www.daolu.co.uk Plus Lee Valley Park is running a Discover Bats, Moths and More event and a Water Vole walk during September www.visitleevalley.org.uk Why not find out details of these local events in your Flyer?
In charity news we share information about the annual Macmillan Coffee Morning at St Peter’s Church in Roydon (6th October, 10.30am – 12 noon). Last year £2,200 was raised for this charity. Teens Unite is bringing a brand-new family tennis tournament to Broxbourne (20th September) as parents and children team up on the court. In addition, Support 4 Sight who helps blind and partially sighted people live the lives they want to lead by providing practical advice, emotional support and opportunities to stay connected, reminds us about National Eye Health Week with this year’s message: get your eyes tested. Plus, Broxbourne Citizens Advice is asking if anyone would like to join their volunteer team?
Club updates this month include Hoddesdon Rotary Club, Lee Valley u3a, Broxbourne u3a and Hoddesdon Camera Club. Don’t miss out on all their news!
