Letter from the Editor
As I write your October issue welcome letter I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and that half term goes well for everyone it’s relevant to. Plus, don’t forget our clocks go back on Sunday 25th October!
Events and community news includes regular and half term activities at Hoddesdon and Harlow libraries. There is the Big Giant Pumpkin Celebration with autumn crafts, spooky stories, a costume competition and carve a pumpkin to take home (27th October, Hoddesdon) and the chance to play Dungeons & Dragons, a role playing-style adventure game for all age ranges (Saturday afternoons, Harlow). There’s also a ‘Are you Cyber and Fraud Aware? free event (16th October) and Step2Skills workshops (3rd November) at Hoddesdon Library. Why not call into your local library and find out more?
There is a free Energy Saving Workshop to help you find ways to reduce your household energy bills (Sawbridgeworth Memorial Hall, 19th November). Booking is essential. You’ll find an opportunity for table tennis players to join one or more local teams within the Harlow Table Tennis League. On Tuesday mornings there are free Love Hoddesdon community walks covering a variety of routes including the park, river and Hoddesdon’s hidden alleyways! Also, Hertfordshire Health Walks are looking for people to join their volunteer teams to deliver fun, free and social local Health Walks. The next volunteer training date is Tuesday 13th October in Broxbourne.
In club news Hoddesdon Tennis Club and Pickleball Club let us know that all abilities and ages are very welcome and Hoddesdon Camera Club shares an update on its recent opening meeting of the new 2026/2027 season with Trophy Night. We have a report from the Broxbourne and Sutera Twinning Association which is celebrating 26 years of community and friendship. Since its formation, the Association has brought people together, creating lasting friendships while celebrating the special links between Broxbourne and the Sicilian town of Sutera. All these groups would be very pleased to hear from you and tell you more about them.
Information from local charities includes a report from Teens Unite about a special, and very inspiring, Athletics Day at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, organised for young people living with and beyond cancer. Citizens Advice Broxbourne invites you to consider making a difference as a volunteer or trustee. Training is completely free. Plus, we find out that nurse Dorothy has taken the leap from 13,000 feet to raise over £1,700 of funds for St Clare Hospice, thanks to the generosity of family and friends. An incredible achievement.
Lee Valley Park shares details about volunteering roles in nature and conservation and tells us about the free Birds of River Lee Country Park guided walks coming up (22nd October and 26th November). Early booking is advised. There seems to be plenty to spot in the Park over autumn! Plus, we have an article about this year’s Queen Eleanor Cycle Ride (QECR) to Waltham Cross; it has a fascinating history.
