Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your new Lee Valley Flyer, a monthly community magazine packed with inspiring things to do locally along with useful community updates.
You may have already seen some of our other Flyer magazines. We now have 14 across towns in Herts, Suffolk and Uttlesford, including the Hertford and Ware, Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth Flyers. In this Lee Valley May issue you’ll find plenty of ideas to make the most of these longer evenings!
Having recently attended the enjoyable Love Hoddesdon Spring Fayre and Heritage Day in April, other events coming up in the Borough of Broxbourne include: Open Air Cinema (Waltham Cross, 26th May), the Broxbourne Big Green Fest (Cedars Park, 7th June), the Goffs Oak Community Day (13th June), the Love Hoddesdon Midsummer Festival with Open Air Cinema (20th June) and Gala Day (28th June). Why not visit www.broxbourne.gov.uk/events and www.lovehoddesdon.co.uk/events.php for details?
Lowewood Museum currently has an exhibition on called ‘Behind the Seams: Costumes from the Collection’ and Hoddesdon library will be focusing on the local history of entertainment on stage and screen during May, with exhibitions and fun events for all ages. The details are in your magazine or why not pop in? Events and activities across Harlow’s five libraries include the free Screentime film club at Harlow library, which shows films every Saturday (2.00-4.00pm).
Friends of Barclay Park talk about some of the work they do and highlight the Fun Dog show which will be at the Park on Sunday 14th June. The Friends would love more people to volunteer on the first Saturday of the month: www.fobp.fun
May is National Walking Month and both River Lee Country Park and Hertfordshire Health Walks have articles about a range of free, sociable local walks. I certainly did not appreciate the full scale of the walks on offer! You may also be interested in finding out more about Roydon Tennis Club, which has regular club sessions, some coaching options and participates in the Essex Small Clubs League.
In local charity and group news Isabel Hospice reminds us about its two Hoddesdon charity shops, one being its dedicated Clearance Outlet with ‘Fill a Bag’ events. These shops help raise vital funds for the hospice, directly supporting compassionate care for patients and their families. We also learn that the Teens Unite Colour Run, suitable for all ages and abilities, is on Sunday 17th May. You can run, walk or jog while being showered with bursts of colour. The event raises vital funds and awareness for this locally based charity, which supports teenagers and young adults across the UK who are living with, and beyond cancer.
Broxbourne u3a tell us about their recent participation in the Older Persons’ Fair, organised by Lewis Cocking MP for local organisations at the Spotlight in Hoddesdon and Hoddesdon Rotary Club share a report about some regular projects and tell us they are one of five local Rotary Groups and work closely together.
All of us at the Flyer hope you enjoy your new magazine; we’ll be pleased to hear your feedback. Local community information, including school news and letters to the editor, is very welcome for our future issues. I’d also like to personally thank everyone I have met, spoken to and been in contact with so far regarding editorial; your support is appreciated.
With best wishes
