Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your July issue. It’s full of local events and community information to help you make the most of the summer.

Hoddesdon, Cheshunt and Harlow libraries tell us about this year’s Summer Reading Challenge for children. Read six books or complete challenges to earn stickers and win a medal and certificate. There are many other activities in the libraries, so why not pop in and find out more? Other local events include the Harlow u3a Choir’s Summer Concert, along with Voices of Harlow (10th July) plus Summer Open Afternoons at St Laurence’s Church, Wormley (25th July, 22nd August, 19th September).

Lowewood Museum is holding a Railway Day, with an opportunity to see working models of old fashioned carriages (29th July) in partnership with the Hoddesdon Model and Railway Club. Pop-up story sessions (12th August) and a Circus Day event (26th August) also take place at the museum, all events are free. On a circus theme, Generation Circus is running weekly Circus Fit sessions for over 50s at Ware Drill Hall. Thanks to funding the programme is free until next June. No commitment required.

Cycling opportunities through the ‘Sofa2Saddle’ programme continue with free, guided bike rides for women of all abilities and Hertfordshire Health Walks offer a range of local volunteer led routes. Or you may like to visit Waltham Cross Sports Festival (15th August), an event which gives people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try a new sport for free. Basketball, football, mini-tennis, calisthenics, skateboarding, boxing and cycling will feature. No charge for entry and equipment is provided.

Thank you to Lee Valley Regional Park for an informative article about Dobbs Weir. With so many places to explore and things to do, including riverside walks, picnics, fishing and wildlife watching, it may be useful to know about the Lee Valley Caravan Park to take time out and soak up the views for longer!

In local club and charity news Citizens Advice Broxbourne tells us it’s part of a national energy project and CA advisers can help with energy-related issues, alongside many other areas. Also, Support 4 Sight is holding a free exhibition (21st July) with the opportunity to explore assistive equipment, technology, and support services designed to help people living with sight loss. Isabel Hospice is running its annual ‘Donate to Feel Great campaign’, which encourages us to turn our summer clear-outs into vital support for local hospice care. Plus, Teens Unite has plans for a dedicated retreat in Broxbourne for teenagers and young adults living with, and beyond, cancer. Community Open Events will be taking place to offer us the opportunity to discover more about the plans and vision. You can also discover the incredible Para Athletic achievements of Bebe Jackson (lived in Harlow and now in Stansted) in your magazine. Bebe is currently working towards representing team GB in the Para Olympics in LA in 2028. Such an inspiring story.

The Woolly Crafters; the Lea Valley Guild of Spinners, Weavers and Dyers; Harlow u3a; the Lee Valley Paddlesports Club and much more are also all in your July Flyer.

Community news is welcomed; thank you very much for your contributions and support so far. Please do email me updates for future Flyers: newsdesk@flyeronline.co.uk Thank you and enjoy this summer issue!
