The Ipswich & District Historical Transport Society Autumn 2025 Season

After our Summer break our next meeting is on Sep 24th -There will be a short Annual General Meeting followed by the Presentation: ‘Submarine accidents’ by Peter Briggs. Peter’s presentation starts with the first disaster attributed to be a submarine disaster in 1774. It looks at the submarine development timeline through the ages of the pioneers of submarine builders, to the start of the modern era of submarine design between 1900 and 1920 when submarine development continued at pace. Then on to the pre-nuclear age and how submarine accident investigation led to better safety equipment being developed, this is put into perspective by looking at two disasters one in the US and one of our own submarines in Liverpool Bay in 1939. The nuclear age of submarines started in 1954 with the launch of USS Nautilus. Peter will give details of these disasters, two US and seven either Russian or Soviet submarines. He will finish with a look at some of RN ‘near misses’ both nuclear and non-nuclear.
The Society meets at the Ipswich Citadel, Salvation Army, 558 Woodbridge Road, Ipswich IP4 4PH at 7.30 p.m. (doors open from 7.00). Free car parking available & refreshments. Entrance fee £2.50. (Non-members £4.00) Non members are always welcome.
