Triangle (Ipswich) MCC reaches its Centenary
The Triangle (Ipswich) MCC was started in 1925 and was originally known as the Red Triangle MCC. The Triangle name comes from the YMCA insignia, because members would meet at the YMCA hut on the Nacton side of Ipswich. The initial president was Major Everett and the Chairman Val Revett, his grandson Gerry, is a member of the club today.
In 1947 C.V. (Monty) Lockwood, a former Manx Grand Prix rider represented the club at Eastern Centre Board meetings. Len Corder, a founder member, was noted as a first-class rider when the club started.
In the early days the club organised reliability trials, hill climbs, social runs, weekend camps and grass track meetings. In the late 1940’s and 1950’s, members bikes were their only form of transport, this would be used for getting to and from work then used at weekends for competitions like trials, scrambling and grasstrack with a few minor adjustments.
In the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s the club was heavily involved in scrambles, trials and moto-ball and in 1962 and 1965 Triangle MCC were British champions. Fred Cotton, Bob Punchard and Brian Booth were top goal scorers during this period. John Louis and Jeremy Doncaster of Ipswich Witches and England speedway were both club members.
While the club has always been involved in all types of motorcycle disciplines, road riding gathered strength during the 90’s and has become a major part of the club. There have been regular ride outs on Thursdays, Sundays and Wednesday evenings, while weekends away have been a common feature, both camping and in hotels. A treasure hunt was organised during the early years and has become a regular event again in recent years. Many club members have taken part in the National Road Rally and Welsh Road Rally.
Ipswich was twinned with Arras in France and through council contacts we started a friendship with the Moto Club Arrageois, which led to many visits to France and visits to Ipswich for our French friends. In 2007 the club organised a visit to the USA for 20 members, it was named The Canyon Tour as we visited many of the canyons on the west side of the USA. We flew into Las Vegas and of course hired Harley’s for the 2-week tour. Many members have been back since then, in smaller groups. Europe has been a destination for the club over the years, but the UK is a firm favourite as it has so much to offer.
The club has always tried to offer its members ride outs, trips and social events. More recently covid hit the club and like many clubs, it was a struggle. We weathered the storm and came out the other side stronger, membership has grown, and we look forward to many more years of motorcycling together. It is all the members (of which there have been thousands) over the last 100 years that have helped this club reach it’s centenary and present members are very proud of being part of it.
