The Ipswich August Mayor’s Update

At the time of writing this (early July), the summer weather has yet to truly arrive, every sunny day is followed by about two or three grey and wet ones!  Hopefully by the time you read this, the weather is more settled, dry and warm and you can enjoy some of the fantastic days out you can have in Ipswich.

The start of my Mayoral year has been busy in one respect, yet quiet in another.  I have been busy because I have been able to get out and about and meet so many different people and learn about so many different organisations at events in the town.

I have been delighted to witness the talents and celebrate the hard work of students of Suffolk College at its Awards and Showcase evening; attending the closing event of the Ipswich Art Societies exhibition at the wonderful St Clement’s Church Arts Venue; and I have celebrated the 25th anniversary of Suffolk Refugee Support at a fashion show held by this organisation.

It was great to attend the Windrush celebration event in the Town Centre last month, and wonderful to see so many people of many backgrounds singing and dancing along to the music acts as well as eating some of the wonderful food on offer.  It was truly a privilege to speak at this event and to honour the vital contributions that the Windrush generation and their descendants have made to Ipswich.

I have also represented the town further afield, at events held by the Mayors of Thetford or Felixstowe, for example, and was honoured to attend an event to celebrate Suffolk Armed Forces Day in Haverhill.  This annual event pays tribute to all the armed forces, and will be held in Ipswich next year, keep your eyes and ears open for news over the coming months!

And of course last month saw another triumphant Ipswich Music Day. This for me is one of the best days in the calendar, and is testament to the hard work of Ipswich Borough Council staff.  Thousands of people visited the town, and our wonderful Christchurch Park to enjoy so many different types of music.  It was also the day that the Indian Summer Mela was celebrated in Christchurch Park, making the day even more special.

And the events don’t stop, keep checking the Ipswich Entertains website at www.ipswichentertains.co.uk for information on Family Fun Days over the summer and other great events that are happening in Ipswich over the coming months.
