The Hertford and Ware Flyer October 2023

Inside the Hertford and Ware October edition. There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news. As we edge into the autumn season and a new term for those in education, I hope we’ll get some pleasant late summer / early autumn days to enjoy and that the community information and events in this issue usefully take you through this new month and beyond.

The Hertford and Ware October Flyer Welcome

Autumn is definitely upon us; a season of great variety with a rich range of colours and hopefully some good weather. I love individual and family walks with crunchy leaves underfoot! Inside this issue you’ll find the latest community news, events and things to do.

Hertford and Ware October Events

There are many events to read about and book into your diaries, including a fundraising Masquerade Ball (14th October) to support CHIPS, the children’s charity – and they even have masks for you to borrow! The next Stanstead Abbotts Concert Society event is on Sunday 15th October and we also have information about two fascinating events at Stanstead Bury Farm, both include a professional story teller – one for families (19th October) and one for adults (20th October).

Sustainable Hertford Heath is holding its Orchard Day on Sunday 22nd October and there are guided tours of the inside and outside of Hertford Castle, led by the Friends of Hertford Castle, on Sunday 29th October (booking advisable).

Ware’s The Film Festival returns for a third year (22nd to 29th October). Organised by Ware Town Council, it includes eight films in different venues. Tickets are offered for free on a first come first served basis! Also in Ware, the next Local Produce and Craft Market is on the 15th October (Tudor Square).

The Hertford and Ware October Culture

New exhibitions are at both town museums (plus autumn walks from Hertford Museum and a half term activity from Ware Museum ) as well as events for all ages at both town libraries. There are also lunchtime concerts in both Ware and Hertford churches; so whatever the weather you’ll be sorted with all this! Find out more inside.

The Hertford and Ware October Groups

A number of groups share updates this month. The Inner Wheel Club of Hertford tells us they presented their last year’s charity ‘Future Hope’ with £1,000.00 raised by club members – fantastic to read. Ware in Bloom, now in its 15th year, passes on a sincere thank you and says volunteers are always welcome and there are 2024 sponsor opportunities.

The Hertford and Ware October Sports Updates

Alastair from Hertford Rugby Club explains how training with the Club prepared him for university and Ware Drill Hall host a Kamaete School of Traditional Shotokan Karate on Sunday evenings; free trial classes are available. Could be a great way to end the week!

Hertford and Ware Local News

There’s also news of a special celebration held in Ware Museum to mark the longstanding contribution of volunteers Josie and Beryl, key members of the museum’s volunteer team for 25 years; really inspiring.

St. John the Baptist Church, Great Amwell, lets us know about a memorial plaque to Richard and Elizabeth Warren who were married in the church in 1610. Richard was one of the Pilgrim Fathers, who left Plymouth on “Mayflower” in 1620. The memorial plaque was sponsored by The Warren Cousins from America, fifteen were present at the ceremony. It’s an incredible story.

Thank you to Dan for his monthly I Love Hertford update (great seasonal photos!) and we also have local school news for you, including Roald Dahl Day, gardening, a trip to Japan and Reception class visits.

I do hope you’ll enjoy this autumnal issue. Thank you very much to everyone who contributes community editorial, we’ll be pleased to continue to share as much as we are able to.

With best wishes
