Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your new season Flyer. We hope September – and beyond – goes well for everyone in education and perhaps this could be the ideal time to participate in activities and events taking place this autumn?
You can find out more inside about local events and community updates, including Hertford Heritage Day at Hertford Castle (20th September); the Heritage Open Day at Place House in Ware (12th September) and a selection of Heritage Open Day guided walks in Hertford and the surrounding area during September. They sound fascinating. Do you enjoy music? There are lunchtime concerts at All Saints in Hertford and St Mary’s in Ware, as well as an all-day Festival of the Performing Arts at St Mary’s (3rd October). All performers are invited for 20 minute slots, donations in aid of the Church Hall and Porch appeal. If you are interested in performing, or coming to any of these events, details are inside your magazine.
Both town museums have exhibitions for you to visit – Ware Museum at 40 (Part one) is on until the 23rd September and ‘Song of the Sea’ at Hertford Museum is on until the 11th October. We also find out about the Ware Police Community Day (13th September, 11am to 3pm) at Ware Priory, with something for everyone! Plus, why not visit the Hertford Heath annual Orchard Day (27th September)?
As a summer of heatwaves set new record high temperatures we are told that over 2400 free community screenings of a new film about climate change have taken place nationally. There are two more screenings happening in our area and you can find out the details in your Flyer. Still on an environmental theme, the All Saints Church Annual Environment Day in Hertford is on the 12th September, 10.00am to 4.00pm. With films, discussion and stalls, as well as the availability of light lunches, it sounds like a very productive day.
In club and charity news we discover that a local garden designer opened her family’s gardens in Bengeo for the NGS, and kindly invited Isabel Hospice volunteers to provide and serve tea and cakes. The event raised in the region of £700.00 vital funds for Isabel Hospice and the charity is extremely grateful. Hertford Chess Club reminds us that the club provides a welcoming environment for all players and they would love to see you on one of their Tuesday Club nights in Lombard House, from about 7.30pm onwards.
Hertford Rotary Club updates us on its recent year end and highlights its role in supporting ShelterBox. The Club also has number of local fundraising events coming up. Additionally, Six Rotary Clubs in Hertford, Ware, Hoddesdon and Royston are endeavouring to raise funds to help SERV (‘The Bloodrunners’) purchase a replacement fleet car to support the work that they do in our region to transport vital life-saving supplies where needed. They are holding a major fundraiser at Ware Drill Hall (12th September).
Thank you to Hertford Men’s Shed for an informative article about what they do and how you can get involved (I personally found out a great deal when reading it) and to Hertford Town Council and I Love Hertford for their regular contributions.
