Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine September ’24 Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Letter from the Editor
As I write this welcome letter, I hope the summer has been going as well as possible and that we can enjoy a good start to early autumn. With a new term for those in education and many local groups now running a full programme of activities, you’ll find inspiration from the community updates in this issue, to take you through September and beyond.
If you enjoy walking (count me in!) the Hertfordshire Health Walks autumn timetable is online. There are eight walks in the Hertford and Ware area, so why not enjoy the benefits of walking while exploring the countryside with others? We also find out about The Great Big Walk for Herts (28th September) which has a choice of 12 loops, each 13 miles long. The event is to help raise funds for young people across Herts.
Other things going on include lunchtime concerts (All Saints and St Mary’s churches); the opportunity to get a free first term of singing for new members of the Hertford Choral Society (thanks to an Arts in East Herts grant there are 40 free places available) plus exhibitions / events at the museums and libraries. BEAM Hertford has now officially opened too – so why not pop in and see what is happening at these places?
The Monday Art Club invites all those interested in art to come along and try out the club (at Riverside Hall in the afternoon) – new members are welcome. There’s also time to visit Scott’s Grotto on Saturday afternoons until the end of September, such a hidden gem and children go in for free. Plus, if you enjoy quizzes, tickets for the St John’s Baptist Church quiz at Great Amwell Parish Hall (18th October) are available – it’s for the heating upgrade fund. In addition, there are regular Sustainable Hertford Heath events taking place and Dan from I Love Hertford highlights the latest news for us – find details about these activities, and more, inside your magazine.
Other club and group updates include information from Hertford Rugby Club about its brand-new Women’s Section; an article about National Swimmers in Ware Swimming Club’s 90th year; the Great Amwell Women’s Club and their donation to Teens Unite (new members are always welcome) and a “Come and Try” Hoedown (7th October) with the Waggoners Square Dance Club in Hertingfordbury – no dance experience is necessary.
We hear from local charities, including CHIPS which is celebrating 30 years of providing integrated playschemes for SEN children and their siblings in East Hertfordshire. Volunteers on Saturdays or during the school holidays are very welcome. The Hertford and District Foodbank would love your help with collecting tinned and dried food for them – and at this Harvest time of year there may be local groups collecting food donations. Holy Trinity Church lets us know that food gifts received by its Harvest Service (15th September) will go to the Foodbank.
The Yarn Bombers have done it once again with an absolutely incredible display of Olympic themed postbox toppers! I do hope you got to see some of them while they were out; they are raising funds for the Hertfordshire Breast Unit Appeal this year. Along with school news to read as well, we hope you enjoy your issue. Thank you to everyone who contributes to the Flyer, your support is appreciated.
With best wishes
