Letter from the Editor
As I write your October issue welcome letter I hope we can all enjoy the autumn colours and that half term goes well for everyone it’s relevant to. Plus, don’t forget our clocks go back on Sunday 25th October!
Your autumn events and community news include a Green Watch talk at All Saints church (10th October); Ware and District Photographic Society’s Annual Exhibition at Thundridge Village Hall (11th October); Free family-focused afternoon craft activities at Leaside Church Community Hall (11th October); St John the Baptist church fundraising quiz in Great Amwell Parish Hall (16th October); free lunchtime concerts at All Saints in Hertford and St Mary’s in Ware and Thursday coffee/tea mornings and Monday short mat bowls at Hertford United Reformed Church.
There are also guided tours at Hertford Castle (25th October); a local RSPB Group meeting with a speaker about the River Beane Conservation Society (27th October); free family movie morning at Holy Trinity Church in Hertford Heath (27th October); Ware’s the Film Festival (free films during the last week of October); regular and half term events at Hertford and Ware libraries including free half term family art workshops (Hertford) as well as a Hertford Choral Society concert at All Saints Church (31st October). In club and society news Hertford Rotary Club reminds us that World Polio Day is on Friday 24th October. In 1985, Rotary was the first civil society to pledge a polio free world and in 1989 became a founding partner of The Global Polio Eradication Initiative. This initiative has reduced polio cases around the world by 99.9%. Ware Bowling Club has been celebrating its centenary year with events and competitions and a member has written a book on the history of the Club. There will also be a 1920s themed dinner dance in November. Additionally, Hertford Civic Society updates us about the fountain in Salisbury Square. Called Confluence, its four main flows of water celebrate the four main rivers of Hertford. It was commissioned by the Society, which owns and manages it, and it has just had its stone base renovated, partly funded by Hertford Town Council.
Charity news includes an article from the Hertford, Ware & District Foodbank about Harvest, a time when communities come together to celebrate the food we have, give thanks, and think about those who may not have enough. If you are planning to support them this Harvest, they’d be delighted to hear from you and can provide posters and further information. Thank you to Hertford Town Council for updating us on the donations made at Rock at the Castle 2026. These totalled an amazing £2,901.50 which goes to this year’s chosen charity beneficiary – Home-Start Hertfordshire. This local charity provides volunteer-led emotional and practical support to families with young children across the county.
Dan from I Love Hertford is preparing for the return of the I Love Hertford Community Awards. He tells us: “These awards aren’t about the loudest voices or the biggest achievements. They’re about recognising the people who quietly make Hertford a kinder and happier place, often without expecting anything in return.” Nominations will be opening through the I Love Hertford social pages, so why not find out more from Dan inside your magazine?
