Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine October ’24 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ (Ode to Autumn by Keats) so let’s hope we get some sunny autumn days and can make the most of our current daylight hours, ahead of the clocks changing on the last Sunday in October. As always, you’ll find plenty of local events and community news in this issue.

Ware library is moving and will be closed from 5.00pm on Saturday 28th September, re-opening on Monday 14th October at 10am at 41-46 High Street in Ware. Hertford library, open as usual during this closure, share some of its regular events with us, plus it is Green Libraries Week (7th-13th October) with a focus on climate and sustainability. Sustainable Hertford Heath’s Apple Day is at the Hertford Heath Community Orchard (19th October). Why not visit, bring apples to be juiced, take part in family friendly activities and learn more about the Group’s plans?

The fundraising quiz night for St John’s Baptist Church is on the 18th October at The Great Amwell Parish Hall. A special new production, ‘Cups on a String’ developed from true stories, will be performed at St Andrew’s Church in Stanstead Abbotts (16th October); it sounds inspiring. The Stanstead Abbotts Concert Society (20th October) and the Stanstead Abbotts Local History Society meeting (11th October) also take place this month. Ware’s the Film Festival Week (27th October – 3rd November) is back, with films showing across the town, all free. I enjoyed this Festival last year and will be booking!

With BEAM Hertford now open there’s a full programme of events to discover here and patient representatives from local GP surgeries are also holding a health information fair at this venue (12th October) for local residents. Thank you to Dan from I Love Hertford who shares news of other Hertford events coming up in his column too.

There are exhibitions at both town museums – ‘At the Edge of the Empire’ in Hertford (from the 26th October) and in Ware ‘Our Local Detectorists’ (until the 9th October) and then Girl Guiding in Ware (from the 19th October). There’s a cardmaking activity at Ware Museum (29th October) and anyone interested in volunteering is welcome to get in touch. As we move further into autumn and beyond, there are Ware Ghost Walks happening on Halloween as well as other dates (suitable for over 12s if accompanied), local Rotary Clubs bring us the Ware Fireworks Display (Saturday 2nd November) and the Ware Dickensian organisers gear up for the 2024 event (6th December). Don’t miss out – the details about all these events, and more, are in your magazine.

We’re delighted to share that GB Paralympic swimmer Grace Harvey from Ware won gold at the Paris 2024 Paralympics; such an incredible achievement. In addition, club and charity news includes Hertford Rotary Club and the ShelterBox scheme; Hertford Heath WI welcoming new members and Hertford Rugby Club launching their Women’s Section. Plus, Isabel Hospice tell us that during October some local solicitors have agreed to donate will writing services to raise funds for their charity.

Your regular school news is also in this issue. Thank you for your support; we hope you enjoy your October Flyer.

With best wishes
