Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine May ’26 Welcome
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your May Flyer. I hope you can enjoy our longer daylight evenings and the wildlife that seems to be everywhere now. We have plenty of inspiration in this month’s issue with ideas of things to do!
There are environmental / nature related days in our towns, with a free Hertford Eco Fest and Family Fun Day hosted by Hertford Town Council in May, and a free Biodiversity Day hosted by Ware Town Council in June. Plus, the Herts Book Festival is happening at BEAM (16th May) and Southern Maltings (17th May) with activities for all ages. Do you enjoy music? The 84th Madrigal Concert takes place at Great Amwell Pool (19th June, 9pm) organised by Haileybury, with donations to Isabel Hospice.
Hertford Town Council has two guided walks: Carvings and Curiosities (4th May) and Gorgeous Georgians (25th May). For details and to book, look inside your magazine or visit: www.hertfordtownshop.co.uk/our-ranges/event-tickets We discover that Hertford Castle Bowls Club is hosting two open days (4th and 24th May) and that there are lunchtime church concerts and events and exhibitions at our town libraries and museums. Also, Street Food Heroes returns to All Saints (28th May). Plus, there’s a brand-new community café at Holy Trinity Church – called Trinity Café – open Wednesdays between 10.30am and 12 noon. The Hertford Heath annual family spring clean in the woods (24th May, 2pm) as well as the monthly litter pick (23rd May) and the Repair Shop (17th May) are all on! There’s a stay and play afternoon event in Hertford Heath village hall (27th May) and summer dates include the Summer Fayre (18th July) and the Preloved clothing sale (2nd August) on Hertford Heath village green / in the church.
In local charity and group news the Rotary Club of Hertford is holding two events, a Camel Race Night in May and a Jazz Evening in June, with the funds going to support Isabel Hospice. The Club tells us that the Isabel Hospice charity-funded outreach services (Living Well, Compassionate Communities, and Children’s Services) have been closed to ensure the continuation of its vital specialist palliative and end-of-life care. Both Hertford Swimming Club and Ware Swimming Club have competition results news this month along with an update from Ware (who have just had their 50th Exchange Gala with TB Wülfrath which they won) that training is now back at Chauncy School Pool, formerly Fanshawe. We also have results updates from Ware FC and a tribute to lifelong supporter Brian Croucher.
RATS Animal Rescue, a small, self-funded charity working across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and surrounding areas, has now opened a charity shop in Ware. The charity takes in dogs, cats and small animals and with the support of volunteers and foster carers, each animal is given the time, treatment and patience to recover and find a loving new home. The shop is open Wednesday to Saturday, 9.30am to 4pm, and all funds raised go towards supporting the charity’s work. Why not pop into the shop?
We have your school news inside and thank you Dan for your I Love Hertford update, full of the joys of spring! We know you (and many others locally) have been training for the London Marathon and we look forward to your update next month.
Thank you for your support and enjoy your Flyer.
With best wishes
