Inside the Hertford and Ware Flyer magazine May ’25 edition. There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news.

Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine May ’25 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s lovely to write this letter knowing longer days will continue to stretch out in front of us for some time. I hope you’ll be able to make the most of this time of year. Hertford Town Council has two guided walks taking place in May, which may be of interest. Plus, you could also visit the Hertfordshire Health Walks and The Hundred Parishes Society websites for walking ideas and information.

Your May issue has all the usual local events and community news, to keep you informed up to and beyond the half term week. This includes VE Day commemoration events and talks at Ware and Hertford Museums (do look inside for dates and details) as well as events in Ware, Hertford and Hertford Heath.

Ecofest will be at Hertford Castle (11th May), a free day of activities shaped around the environment and sustainability, organised by Hertford Town Council. Thank you to the council for sharing an update on events in this issue. Hertford Choral Society is holding an Open Singing Day, booking is essential, and all levels are welcome. There’s also a talk from Lea Valley Orchid Society (16th May) on “The orchids of Vercors”, a region of wild limestone hills situated between the Rhone Valley and the western Alps.  It’s open to all, so why not find out more inside?

With half term ahead there are free children’s activities for all ages at Ware Priory, no booking is required. A planting session (27th May) with Ware in Bloom and a pop-up sports day (29th May). There are lunchtime concerts at All Saints’ Church in Hertford and St Mary’s Church in Ware and as well as the usual local events, the RSPB SE Herts Group has a trip to my home county of Rutland, to see the Ospreys! New members are always welcome. We’ve also got the regular Sustainable Hertford Heath events (and the May Pole Dancing village event, which we mentioned last time!) This year will be the 85th performance of the Madrigal Concert at Great Amwell Pool (20th June, 9pm) with donations to Isabel Hospice. I’ve really enjoyed this concert myself. You can find out more about all these activities in your Flyer.

Club and Group news includes a report from the Friends of Fanshawe, volunteers led by Ware Swimming Club, about the progress of their Crowd Funder campaign: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-fanshawe-swimming-pool-and-gym#start and both the Rotary Club of Hertford and the Waggoners Square Dance Club share member news. All these groups would welcome you getting in touch, if you’d like to find out more, offer support and get involved.

Congratulations to Corinna, a mentor for social enterprises, charities, and community businesses, who has been named a finalist for the Outstanding Contribution Award at the National Mentoring Matters Awards 2025. Corinna is a Community Builder at Community Alliance Broxbourne and East Herts, based in Stanstead Abbotts, and she can support local charities, social enterprises or community groups with free guidance.

Alongside school news, we also have Dan’s I Love Hertford update, thank you, with information about Waterford Heath (sounds lovely) and Hertford Street Heroes, now located at All Saints’ Church every last Thursday of the month. Thank you for all your support and I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.

With best wishes
