The Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine March ’25

Inside the Hertford and Ware Flyer magazine March ’25 edition. There’s a great choice of things to do in this issue, alongside your community news.

Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine March ’25 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

With the clocks moving forward by an hour at the end of March (don’t forget!), it really is starting to feel more like spring. Let’s hope we can get out and enjoy some fresh air if we’d like to. If self-guided walking routes may be of interest to you, I can recommend the choice of free routes offered by The Hundred Parishes Society: www.hundredparishes.org.uk

You’ll find local things to do and community news in your issue, to keep you up to date. Events include the Ware based Produce and Craft Market (16th March) in Tudor Square; the Hertford based FUTUREhope quiz evening (22nd March) raising funds for their charity and the Community Alliance free course providing tools needed to look for and apply for jobs: www.communityalliancebeh.org.uk Sustainable Hertford Heath also has its regular repair shop (16th March) and litter pick (22nd March) events. There are concerts from the Stanstead Abbotts Concert Society (16th March), Hertford Choral Society (29th March) and Ware Choral Society (5th April) as well as lunchtime church concerts in both Ware and Hertford (details and dates are in your magazine).

Additionally, there’s a Stanstead Abbotts Local History Society meeting and a Community Hub drop- at St. Mary’s Church, St. Margaret’s. Library events include the Colouring and Craft club and the Board Games club for adults in Ware and the Page One book club and a dance theatre show for children in Hertford. Plus, there are exhibitions in both the town museums: Sweet memories at Ware Museum, which celebrates some much-loved businesses and individuals from the town’s past and Barbara Cartland, the woman behind over 700 romantic novels (she lived in Essendon from 1950 until her death in 2000) at Hertford Museum. They sound fascinating!

The Rotary Club of Hertford Shires tells us about its fundraising event in March – Uncle Funk’s Disco Inferno at Ware Drill Hall. This event is raising funds for their headline charity, Keech hospice, as well as SERV Herts and Beds, who are car and biker volunteers transporting blood, samples and other items free of charge. Why not find out more about this event, as well as all the others I have mentioned, inside your Flyer?

In Club news this month Hertford Rotary Club shares information about who they are and what they do. In the past nine years, they have raised close on £90,000 which has been donated to 72 charities and causes. Of these donations, 18 were international, 11 were national and 43 were local. They hold regular social events too. In addition, we hear from the Inner Wheel Club of Hertford. They tell us that they also help local, national and international charities and they’re now preparing for their annual Spring Fayre on the 12th April at Oasis Café in Hertford. They warmly invite you to come along to this event. Both clubs would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to find out more about them.

Thank you to Dan for his March update, which includes details about the “Dog Friendly Hertford” campaign on I Love Hertford’s social media channels and to Hertford Town Council for a round up on some events and activities. As usual we also have news from local primary and secondary schools. We hope you enjoy reading this early springtime issue and thank you for all your support.

With best wishes

As I write it’s good to know that our daylight hours are gradually lengthening. Let’s hope we can all enjoy signs that spring is ahead, like when the snowdrops begin to appear. I love these beautiful, delicate and uplifting flowers. In this issue you’ll be able to catch up on a range of local community news and events, to use as the month progresses.

As well as enjoying any wintertime walking we may choose to undertake (which could include free Herts Health Walks and The Hundred Parishes Society free walking routes) – we have details about ‘Haunted Hertford Walks’ in February; intriguing! Ware’s the Community (22nd February) is an event that gives you a chance to find out what’s on offer in the town, the choice is huge! A new Colouring and Craft club is at Ware library (adults) and new Science workshops at Hertford library (children). Plus, the town museums are running half term activities and free lunchtime concerts take place at All Saints and St Mary’s churches.

Ware Town Council tells us about the Mayor of Ware’s fundraising themed dinner event, to support Herts Inclusive Theatre (15th February) and we find out that the Mayor of Hertford’s Charity Quiz 2025 has raised nearly £2000 for East Herts Citizens Advice and Hertford and District Girl Guides. Hertford Town Council highlights some of last year’s events and looks ahead to 2025 events plus Ware Town Council shares news on the theme for the Ware Festival 2025.

Updates from other community and charity groups includes a presentation to Eileen and Jim Smith for their work with Unpaid Carers at the Hertford Bowls Club. They set up ‘Bowling for Carers’ in 2015, which offers carers respite and is available to any unpaid adult carer and children over the age of ten in the school holidays. Also, at Hertford and Ware Karate Club, Karen Gibbs has received a special award for her loyalty, support and for being the longest serving student for over 30 years. Fantastic achievements. In addition, we have information about February community events from Sustainable Hertford Heath; the opportunity to come to a Coffee and Coping meet up in Stanstead Abbotts and free Circusfit classes in Ware for anyone aged 50 and over.

Ware Swimming Club shares news about the annual Portch Christmas Gala and a hugely successfully 24-hour swim to raise money for a new cancer unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital, organised by Sara Matthews and Billy Cyl. We also hear from Ware Christmas Together, where 104 people were catered for on Christmas Day and everyone who supported the day was thanked – the organisers said: “It really showed the best of our community spirit.” Such incredibly inspirational events.

The Flyer is pleased to share the news that long-standing Isabel Hospice volunteer Renée Friend has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the New Year Honours List, for services to charity and her community. A wonderful recognition – Renée has been volunteering for nearly four decades. On hearing the news, she said: “It is such a privilege to be recognised for my work with Isabel Hospice, which has always been so close to my heart.”

Thank you to Dan for his I Love Hertford update and we have school news too. We do hope you enjoy your issue and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
