Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine June ’25 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your June issue of the Flyer and doesn’t it feel like we’re at the gateway to summer? I hope you’ll find your magazine full of useful local events and inspiration, as we make the most of the opportunities we get with these light evenings!

There are so many activities coming up, including ‘Within these Walls’ Evening Tours in the grounds of Hertford Castle until August; Makers and Bakers indoor craft markets on the first Sunday of the month at the Corn Exchange; Street Food Heroes on the last Thursday of the month at All Saints Churchyard; a play at The Little Theatre (13th to 21st June); lunchtime concerts at St Mary’s Church and All Saints’ Church; summer concerts from Hertford Choral Society (21st June) and Ware Choral Society (5th July) and the Hertfordshire Festival of Music (7th to the 14th June). Preparations for Rock at the Castle are well underway (it’s on the 3rd August) plus the Hertfordshire launch of the library Summer Reading Challenge is on the 5th July!

Other events include Hertford Town Council’s “Tales From the Riverbank” guided walk (29th June) and a history of Ware tour, organised by Ware Museum (first Sunday of the month until September). There’s also a Hertford Museum organised guided walk of West Street, with Peter Ruffles (22nd June).

The Ware Festival starts on Saturday 5th July with Carnival Day and the Town Parade (plus the Ware Boat Parade and river activities are on this date). The Festival month then continues with a series of events. Hertford Heath’s annual Summer Fayre (13th July) will have traditional fete games, food, a raffle and more; all money raised goes back to village based groups. “Will you still love me?”, a circus show with performers aged between 52 and 77 (supported by Age Without Limits, Ware Town Council and East Herts Council) is at Ware Drill Hall on the 14th and 15th June. There are more events inside too!

In this issue we have a report on local VE Day 80 events – with people of all ages getting together to commemorate this significant date. Music, cake and cups of tea were definitely part of it. We also highlight the VE Day 80 fundraising yarnbomb from the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters – it was just incredible! Thank you to everyone who has sent in articles to us.

News from local groups and charities includes an article from Stephen, a member of the Rotary Club of Hertford, highlighting what the Club does, its fundraising work, two events (music evening with BBQ, 22nd June and a Family Fun Day at Hertford Castle, 3rd August) and how you can get involved. Isabel Hospice reminds us of its Tonnes of Care initiative and shares the dates of Mobile Donation Days at Wodson Park and Van Hage over the next few months. We also hear from Herts Health Walker June. In memory of her brother Ray she took part in Race for Life (for the third time) with her granddaughter Maggie. This year alone she has raised £550; such an inspiring achievement.

You’ll find school news inside and thank you to Dan from I Love Hertford for his report (look out for Dan on a community stall on the 14th June!) We hope you enjoy this month’s issue; thank you for your support.

With best wishes
