Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine June ’24 Welcome
Letter from the Editor
I hope you can appreciate the great outdoors as much as possible this month and perhaps take part in ‘30 Days Wild’ organised by the Wildlife Trusts – it’s free and good fun for all ages! June is such a lovely time of year.
There’s plenty to catch up on this time, with a wide range of community news and events. If you enjoy music the Hertfordshire Festival of Music takes place in and around Hertford (between the 7th and 15th June); Hertford Choral Society’s ‘Songs from the West End’ is coming up (22nd June, All Saints’ Church, Hertford) and week day lunchtime concerts are at All Saints’ Church in Hertford and St Mary’s Church in Ware.
Other summer events include the Hertford Family Fun Day organised by the Rotary Club of Hertford (23rd June, Hertford Castle Grounds). Entrance is free with donations for Keech Cottage Children’s Hospice and Young Carers of Hertford. Isabel Hospice will be serving teas during a NGS Open Garden event in Bengeo (23rd June). The Ware Festival, which starts with the Carnival Day (6th July) kicks off a month of community events for all ages. This also includes the Ware Festival of Running (7th July) and many other events. Plus both town museums and libraries are full of choices of things to do. Why not look in your issue for details about all these events and more?
Hertford Art Society
Local group news includes an update from the Hertford Art Society about its summer programme of painting and sketching out of doors at various venues in the Hertford and Ware area. If you would be interested, the Society invites you to join them for some of these evenings. We also hear from Ware Swimming Club (which is currently in its 90th year) about continued success and going from strength to strength in League Competitions and Open Meets.
Isabel Hospice highlights a community appeal to help raise funds for vital medication; only 30% of the medication in the In-Patient Unit is funded by the NHS. We also discover that Men’s Shed Ware, which recently marked its first anniversary, provides a welcoming space where members can socialise while working together on woodworking projects for the community. The Hertford and District Foodbank are looking to rent a small warehouse in the Hertford/Ware area to store food and assemble food packages. Food donations are also gratefully received (donation points in several supermarkets). If you would like to contact or help these charities they would be very pleased to hear from you.
I was able to join a Ware Town Tour recently and found it fascinating. It was so interesting to see inside one of the riverside gazebos and learn about the significance of maltmaking in the town – amongst the many other things that were included as part of the tour! Thank you very much to John, our volunteer Guide. These monthly tours are on until September, so there’s plenty of time to join one. Plus, we hear from The Hundred Parishes Society about the barley-growing area of the Hertfordshire and Essex border in this issue too.
I Love Hertford
As well as your local school news inside, Dan’s I Love Hertford column is packed with information about the recent Shop Local Saturday Hertford event; sounds like more will be planned!
Thank you for your support and enjoy your June Flyer.
With best wishes
