Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine January ’26 Welcome
January 2026
Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your first Flyer magazine of 2026; we’ve plenty of news and events to take you through January and beyond. I’m looking forward to wrapping up warmly on ‘blow the cobwebs away’ winter walks. Why not take a look at the 10 free walks in Hertford, Ware and surrounding villages organised by Hertfordshire Health Walks or visit the website of The Hundred Parishes Society, which is full of free self-guided walking routes? You’ll be glad you did!
The Winter Reads Challenge is still running throughout January at your local Herts library; there are exhibitions at both Ware and Hertford museums along with lunchtime concerts at both St Mary’s church in Ware and All Saints’ church in Hertford; a free evening event with the SE Herts Scottish Dance Society (13th January) at Sele Farm Community Centre and a Wassailing event at the orchard in Hertford Heath (24th January).
The Mayor of Hertford, Cllr Steven Watson invites you to his Charity Quiz Night at Simon Balle school (9th January), to raise money for Herts Young Homeless and Hertford Scouts. Plus, the Mayor of Ware Cllr Graeme Hill, a Scot himself, invites you to a Burns Night Celebration (24th January) at Fletchers Lea, Ware Priory, raising funds for Isabel Hospice.
We also discover there’s a Health and Wellbeing Festival at Southern Maltings in Ware, offering relaxation, fitness and entertainment (11th January) which sounds very interesting!
Thank you to Hertford Town Council for their report, which includes a reminder of the next Hertford Dark Skies event (7th February) with the opportunity to stargaze with experts from Hertford Astronomy Group. Also thank you to Robert at Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre for letting us know about a special free, family-friendly exhibition train at Hertford East station (7th and 8th February). It’s part of Railway 200, the national campaign celebrating two centuries of the modern railway. Book your free tickets!
In local charity and club news Isabel Hospice has launched its ‘Gift of Time’ volunteering campaign, celebrating the extraordinary impact volunteers make and calling on more people to get involved in 2026. We also hear about the wonderful celebration for Joan’s 100th birthday at the Millbrook Women’s Club; the achievements of Ware Swimming Club members recognised at their recent annual celebration evening and Ware Inner Wheel, in support of the United Nations international ‘Orange the World’ project against gender-based violence, distributed information and held an orange meal to raise funds for local women’s refuges. Plus, the Hertford and District u3a group tell us they have over 80 interest groups and also meet monthly at BEAM. All these local groups would welcome new members.
I’ve been keeping busy, having visited the festive weekend in Hertford (great to see Dan from I Love Hertford), the Ware Dickensian Evening, the Hertford Heath Winter Weekend (pictures to follow), an inspiring ‘Happy Days’ local author community event with Natalie Cassidy and the Book Nook in Ware and I’ve been admiring the wonderful festive SSOHC yarnbomb, showing us where we find joy in our lives; such talented crafters (donations welcome to ‘The Hertford Pantry’ via: www.ssohc.co.uk).
We also have school news for you too. Thank you to everyone who sends us local community editorial and supports the Flyer, we hope you enjoy reading this New Year issue.
With best wishes
