Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine January ’25 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

A very warm welcome to our first issue of 2025 and we hope this new year starts well.  As usual, there’s plenty of content covering a range of local community news and events, to help inform and inspire us through January and beyond.

There are lots of events coming up, including the chance to try Scottish Dancing at Sele Farm Community Centre; a Virtual Volunteer Fair (22nd January) to hear about local charities and their volunteering roles; Ware Ghost Walks (23rd January and 20th February) suitable for 12+ accompanied by an adult and Wassailing (derived from the Anglo Saxon ‘wes hal’ meaning ‘be whole’, or as we would say today, ‘good health’) from Sustainable Hertford Heath (25th January).

Also, Hertford Soundbites free lunchtime concerts resume at All Saints’ Church (29th January and 5th February) and there is a free Sound Journey (14th February) at Fletchers Lea, with soothing, harmonious sounds to induce deep relaxation and meditation.

‘Ware’s The Community’ returns and will showcase groups and organisations based in the Ware area. A chance to find groups you might wish to join or help as a volunteer (22nd February) and there’s still time to have a stall! Activities at the town libraries include baby, toddler and children’s events and an adult Board Games Club (Fridays) and a new adult Colouring and Craft Club (13th and 27th January) at Ware library. Hertford Library is asking for any pre-loved books for their book sale trolley. There is plenty to see at the museums and Ware Museum asks if you would like to volunteer there as a steward? Also, if you feel like getting some fresh air there are  free Herts Health Walks near you, all run by trained volunteer leaders.

Updates from other local groups and charities includes Ware Swimming Club’s awards celebration evening; a knitting and crochet group in Stanstead Abbotts (which is also open for people to chat or get advice) and Local Social, who received a Ware Town Council grant – they meet up at different venues for a chat and a hot drink, to bring people and neighbourhoods together in Ware and surrounding areas.

We also find out about TLG Make Lunch club, a Christian charity who partner with local churches such as St Andrew’s in Stanstead Abbotts, to feed children and families with more than just a meal; with support, safety and belonging. In addition, Isabel Hospice tell us about their “Gift of Time” campaign, encouraging people to explore volunteering. They’re holding volunteer information sessions in January. Why not look inside your magazine to find out more about the activities, groups and charities I’ve highlighted? As well as about other groups too.

Additionally, thank you to Pam for her inspiring news about swimming 80 lengths at 80 to support ShelterBox (donations have exceeded £1,450); to Dan at I Love Hertford for a focus on the annual I Love Hertford “celebration of greatness” awards and to Hertford Town Council for a January news update (the 2025 events programme will be launched soon and Hertford Town and Tourist Information Centre produce a weekly community e-newsletter you can sign up to). We also have the regular school updates.

We do hope you enjoy your Flyer and thank you very much for your support and contributions.

With best wishes
