Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine April ’26 Welcome

Letter from the Editor

It’s lovely to write your April welcome letter, knowing that the bluebells will be emerging as a welcome and uplifting sign of springtime. I hope you discover local events and ideas in your Flyer that will inspire you to make the most of this new season. Also, that chocolate (for those who like it) may feature over Easter and beyond!

Things to do include two free Hertford Town Council events: The Hertford Art and Literature Festival (11th April) in the grounds of Hertford Castle and the Children’s Easter Trail (4th to 26th April), run with the Secret Society of Hertford Crafters. Scott’s Grotto in Ware opens for the season from Saturday 4th April and they have a special Easter Monday event. Subsequently they will be open every Saturday and Bank Holiday afternoon until the end of September. It really is such a wonderful place.

‘The Historic Hertford’ guided walk (6th April) sounds fascinating; tickets and information are online or in person from the Town and Tourist Information Centre. Ware Choral Society has a spring concert (11th April); Hertford Heath is holding a Try Petanque Day (25th April) and a Maypole Dancing event (4th May); lunchtime concerts are at St Mary’s Church and All Saints’ Church (dates inside); events and exhibitions are at both museums and libraries; the Hertford Art Trail (28th March – 11th April) and Open Exhibition (3rd April – 2nd May) are on; Afternoon cinema at Fletcher’s Lea, Ware Priory (www.waretowncouncil.gov.uk/whats-on/afternoon-cinema); Open Days for the Hertford Castle Bowls Club (4th and 24th May); the ‘Love and Hope’ Hertford Photo Festival that we mentioned last month has a Community Day at All Saints’ Church (9th May) and the Herts Book Festival returns to Ware and Hertford (16th and 17th May). So much choice!

In local charity and group news all the Isabel Hospice shops are now open on Sundays, providing an extra day to browse, shop, drop off donations, and support vital local hospice care. Hertford Rotary updates us on information about Rotary’s current involvement in clean water in Ukraine. Hertford Swimming Club has results from the Herts Counties competitions and Ware Swimming Club announces that it will be returning to training at the pool at Chauncy School, formerly Fanshawe pool. The pool has now re-opened and will initially host club and school swimming sessions.
Thank you to the Thundridge Old Church Action Group for a detailed article. Dave Blowers, acting Chair, tells us there was a meeting in 2019 to respond to a threat by the Diocese of St Albans to demolish the tower if the parish council or other organisation did not take it over. The Parish Council decided not to get involved, so TOCAG was formed. TOCAG, now a registered charity, has run two major grant funded investigations and is preparing to take over management and repair of the tower. Why not look inside and see how you may be able to help them?

Alongside your school news we have Dan’s I Love Hertford update. All of us at the Flyer would like to wish Dan (who is raising funds for Phoenix Charity of Hertford), as well as everyone else who is taking part, the very best of luck in the London Marathon!

We hope you enjoy your magazine and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
