Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine April ’25 Welcome

Letter to the Editor

Welcome to your April issue. It’s lovely to have longer daylight hours now, as well as an increasing number of spring flowers. I especially love bluebells and look forward to seeing them every year.

Your Flyer is packed with local news and things to do. Easter activities include an Easter Egg Hunt (under 8s) and an egg decorating competition for all ages (19th April) in Ware and a family Easter trail throughout the school holidays in Hertford; the ‘Secret Society of Hertford Crafters’ have been weaving their magic again! There’s also an Easter family fun day in Stanstead Abbotts (19th April) at the Red Lion. Holy Trinity Church in Hertford Heath and St Mary’s Church in Ware share their Easter services, with activities for all. In addition, we have an update about other Hertford Heath events, including a preloved clothes sale (20th April); a Try Pétanque Day (27th April) and May Pole Dancing (5th May). I’ve already had a go at May Pole dancing, great fun, and keep saying I will try Pétanque!

Other things to do this month include visiting Scott’s Grotto in Ware, now open each Saturday and Bank Holiday afternoon (5th April – 27th September). They are hosting a ‘Monster Mania’ event for explorers, young and old, on the Easter Monday Bank Holiday (10.00am to 4.00pm). The Old Barge’s Duck Race is also on Easter Monday (5pm), with proceeds towards the Hertford and Ware Sea Cadets.

Another event is Hertford Town Council’s HArts Fest (12th April) – to celebrate art and literature in Hertford and the Castle will also be open for visitors to explore free of charge. Plus, on the literature theme, why not ‘Explore life in Hertford in the time of Shakespeare’ on a guided walk on Easter Monday? Find out more here: www.hertfordtownshop.co.uk Hertford Museum has drop-in crafts (Tuesdays to Thursdays over the two weeks) and Ware Museum has a drop-in craft event on the first Tuesday of the Easter holidays. We also discover plenty of activities at both town libraries. Plus the Hertford Art Society Open Exhibition detailed last month, is on from the 3rd to the 10th May. Why not find out more about all these activities in your Flyer?

Group and Club news includes a report from Ware FC highlighting the youth teams and their successes and the RSPB SE Herts Group with details about April events; new members are always welcome. Additionally, Ware Swifts is installing swift boxes (made by Ware Men’s Shed); a great way to provide alternative nest sites. If you’re interested in having a box on your house, the contact details are inside.

To mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day a number of local commemoration events will be taking place, including at Ware Priory on the Front Lawn and at Hertford Castle in the Grounds (8th May) and in Hertford Heath (10th May) – such a significant occasion.

We find out from the Friends of Fanshawe, volunteers led by Ware Swimming Club, that they’re working to get the doors of Fanshawe Pool and Gym reopened. They’ve launched a time-specific Crowd Funder campaign: www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/save-fanshawe-swimming-pool-and-gym#start and would be very grateful for support.

We also have Dan’s I Love Hertford update, thank you, and school news for you. We appreciate your support and hope you enjoy any chocolate you may have during Easter – I’m sure we will in our household!

With best wishes
