Hertford and Ware Flyer Magazine April ’24 Welcome
Letter from the Editor
It’s lovely to see so many spring flowers out, I especially like the yellow and purple colours. Perhaps we can enjoy more time outside now, maybe with family and friends if we are able to, and if the weather lets us!
With things to do, plus the latest community news and information, we hope your April Flyer is useful. Events include the Hertford Art Society’s Open Exhibition, Cowbridge Halls (26th April to 4th May) and the Ware Food Festival, Priory grounds (12th May). Plus Hertford Heath Petanque invite you to come and try the game, all welcome (28th April) and there’s traditional dancing around the Maypole (6th May), on the Village Green!
HArts Fest, promoting local art and cultural activities, is from the 13th April to the 20th April. New for 2024 is the introduction of a standalone HArts Fest event on the Hertford Castle grounds (13th April). Hertfordshire Health Walks are currently in Ware (Fridays at 10am from Southern Maltings) plus there are many other Health Walks nearby.
Additionally, there’s an art exhibition at St Mary’s Church, Ware (26th April to 29th April) and you’ll find plenty to do in our town libraries and museums, including exhibitions and events (in Ware library this includes a Board Games Club for adults plus Baby Rhyme Time and Toddler Tales at both libraries). You should find copies of this magazine in these places too!
Holy Trinity Church in Hertford Heath is asking for help. It’s in need of new carpets and flooring. Over the years the carpet has been central to many important events and is in dire need of replacement. Find out more, and how you can help, inside.
Thank you to the town Mayors for their updates. Cllr Vicky Smith, Mayor of Hertford, shares highlights of the year and talks about the fundraising for her chosen charities Mudlarks and The Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust. She says: “It has been a privilege and a pleasure to perform the role of Mayor”. Councillor Thomas Day, Mayor of Ware (with Councillor Graeme Hill, Town Clerk, Terry Philpott, and Council Officer, Kerry Mavris) undertook a four day charity bike ride from Ware’s French twin town. The goal was to raise awareness and funds for Citizens Advice East Herts and so far, the cyclists have raised £1,500 in donations. Incredible achievements to read about!
Other charity fundraising news includes Waggoners Square Dance Club (Hertingfordbury) presenting local charity Teens Unite with £325; Hertford Inner Wheel ‘celebrate 100 years of Inner Wheel’ with donations to the Hertford Food Bank, ALFS for Ukraine and Knit for Peace. The Club’s Spring Fayre, in support of Isabel Hospice, is on the 20th April.
Ware based artist Alex Devlin is taking part in Paws on the Wharf; an accessible art trail in London across Canary Wharf. The trail – a collaboration between Guide Dogs and Wild in Art – brings a collection of vibrant larger-than-life guide dog sculptures to Canary Wharf; each decorated by artists. The trail is open until the 17th May. It sounds very inspiring; why not find out more?
Dan’s I Love Hertford column includes an introduction to a new seasonal event called “Shop Local Saturday” – intriguing! Plus, we share plenty of school news. Enjoy your magazine and thank you for your support of the Flyer.
With best wishes
