Letter from the Editor The Hertford and Ware Flyer April
As we’re now officially in British Summer Time we can look forward to much more daylight. In fact we won’t get a sunset any earlier than 6pm until well into October! As we welcome you to this April issue of the Flyer – and the community information and events inside – I’m also looking forward to seeing the bluebells appear around us; one of my absolute favourite flowers.
This month we’re pleased to share a special tribute from Françoise, who lives in France but visited Ware as a student to practise her English and has happy memories of the town. Thank you for writing this. We would also like to thank the Mayors of Hertford and Ware, who have kindly answered some quick fire questions about their towns in this April issue. Additionally, we’ve received an article from Emily, about her experience of volunteering at Ware library, and a spring time ‘I Love Hertford’ update from Dan; thank you.
Hertford and Ware April Events
As we move into this new season there are many local events taking place. These include HArts Fest 2023 (Saturday 8th April to Saturday 15th April); the Stanstead Abbotts Concert Society (Sunday 16th April, 7.30pm) and the Ware Bowling Club open day (Sunday 30th April, between 10am and 2pm).
Coronation Events Hertford and Ware
We also have two Coronation themed events: “Picnic on the Lawn” at Hertford Castle (Sunday 7th May) and the “Ware Annual Food Festival” in the Priory Gardens (Sunday 7th May). Additionally, the second Herts Book Festival (Saturday 13th May) takes place in the Hertford Castle Grounds and Ware Drill Hall updates us on some of the activities taking place there. Plus there are events and activities at Ware and Hertford libraries and Hertford and Ware Museums and plenty going on in Hertford Heath village (including Petanque on the 22nd April and there’s Maypole dancing on the 1st May). Do find out about all these and other events in your Flyer!
In charity news, Isabel Hospice nurse Janice Penman has challenged herself to conquer 12 mountains in 12 months in aid of the charity. Every climb she undertakes will be in celebration or memory of someone, or something special. It’s so inspiring to read.
We have club and group updates from the Inner Wheel Club of Hertford, with their Spring Fayre at The Oasis Café, Ware Road (Saturday 22nd April, 10.00am to 12.00 noon); Ware Poets, who are running a Ware Poetry Competition (30th April is the closing date for entries); the 1st Hertford Heath Cubs and Beavers who are seeking a volunteer Chair Person and the 2nd Bengeo Scout Group who have spaces in all sections and volunteer vacancies. Why not read more inside?
If you’re interested in getting outside more, Hertfordshire Health Walks have free guided local daytime walks (plus a Wednesday evening walk from May) and The Hundred Parishes Society have self-guided walking routes (www.hundredparishes.org.uk/walks) Don’t forget to send us a few of your walk photos!
In school news we have World Book Day updates (Bengeo; Priors Wood; Simon Balle; Amwell View School Charity Shop); a forthcoming trip to Sicily (Sele); Much Ado About Nothing (Presdales); ‘Sensory Week’ (Amwell View) and ‘British Science Week’ (Hertford Heath).
Enjoy catching up on all these articles and more. Thank you for your support.
With best wishes
