From The Mayor
As summer draws to a close, Felixstowe has once again shown the strength, pride and community spirit that make our town special. The past few weeks have been filled with events bringing people together, honouring our history and celebrating local talent throughout our town.
One of the most meaningful occasions was the VJ Day Commemoration at the War Memorial. It was moving to see veterans, families and Standard Bearers gathered to pay tribute to those who served in the Far East and remember the sacrifices made in the final chapter of the Second World War. My sincere thanks go to the Felixstowe Branch of the Royal British Legion for organising a dignified and heartfelt service. Their commitment ensures these important moments continue to be marked with the respect they deserve.
Another highlight was the Suffolk Punch Scout event at Hallowtree Camp. Around 600 Scouts and Explorers camped for four days, joined daily by Cubs and Beavers. The volunteers put in a huge amount of work to create a safe, exciting and unforgettable experience. Cass joined me, and it was inspiring to see the Scouts enjoying activities including zip wire, air rifle, archery, axe throwing, canoeing, paddle boarding and crafts. The sense of adventure and confidence was clear, and we returned on Sunday to see even more.
I was also honoured to attend the Sea Shanty fundraiser at Landguard Fort, supporting the Felixstowe Independent Lifeboat. More than 200 people attended, thanks to volunteers from both the Fort and lifeboat team. We are incredibly fortunate to have a volunteer lifeboat service that relies entirely on donations and fundraising to continue its vital work. Everyone who attended helped support the volunteers who keep our coastline safe, often in challenging conditions.
Felixstowe has also been alive with music. WAMFest and Music in Felixstowe’s Proms on the Prom brought large crowds to the seafront and showcased an impressive range of talented musicians. From choirs and bands to solo performers, the standard was exceptional, and all performances were free for residents and visitors to enjoy. These events highlight the creativity within our town and the dedication of organisers and volunteers who work tirelessly to make them happen.
There were many other events that Cass and I attended over the past few weeks, far too many to mention individually, but each reflected the passion, generosity and community spirit that define Felixstowe.
Thank you to everyone who organises, volunteers, participates and supports these events. You make our town vibrant, welcoming and proud.
Cllr Darren Aitchison, Mayor of Felixstowe
