Mayor’s update – The Felixstowe Flyer October ’24 | Flyer Magazines

The summer seems to have flown by, but since I last wrote we have had some fantastic events in Felixstowe. Art on the Prom was a great success with many enjoying all of the wonderful artwork on display. The Love Felixstowe Festival, organised by Felixstowe BID in conjunction with East Suffolk Council and Felixstowe Town Council, offered three days of free entertainment, and coincided with Stage Six of the Men’s Tour of Britain, bringing visitors into Felixstowe from all across the country. The weekend was a fantastic boost to the town, and it was quite a spectacle to see internationally acclaimed cyclists racing across the finish line on Sea Road.
In August we remembered the crashing of the RAF Lancaster Bomber 80 years ago in the sea off Felixstowe with the loss of all crew. We held a memorial service outside the Town Hall to remember those who lost their lives. I laid a wreath at the grave of F/O Glyn Davies Mathias, who is buried in Felixstowe Cemetery, and a wreath was laid at sea at the position of the crash. It was a very moving occasion and my thanks go to the Felixstowe Museum for arranging the event and for ensuring that the records of Felixstowe’s history are maintained.
I was delighted to host the Mayors Charity Bargain Hunt and Auction at Landguard Fort on 5 September. Ten local charities competed in a Charity Bargain Hunt, kindly sponsored by Maritime Transport, and scoured the local shops for items to be sold at auction on the evening. A delicious selection of cheese and fresh focaccia was generously provided by the Alba Chiara, and expertly paired with wines provided by Adnams. In total, we raised over £4500! I would like to say a massive thank you to all the businesses who gave the bargain hunters such good deals, all those who placed bid for items, and to my charities Landguard Trust and Breast Friends for working so hard to ensure the event went so well.
Our next event will be a Barn Dance on 11 October, hosted at Felixstowe Labour Club, and Boogie Bingo on 15 November, so look out for details! October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A number of local cafes will make a donation to Breast Friends, and will display a pink poster in their windows to show their support. The cafés who have generously offered to make a donation are:
• Boardwalk on the Pier
• Lotty’s Tearoom in High Road East
• Angel Inn in Walton
• Wool Baa (who also provide knitted items in support of Breast Friends).
• Little Ice Cream Company in Undercliff Road
• Bar 129 in Undercliff Road
• The Greenhouse Cafe in Orwell Road But more are welcome! If you own or manage a coffee shop and would like to take part, contact us at mayor@felixstowe.gov.uk. Or, if you have a favourite café, why not ask them if they would consider taking part?
In September we celebrate 50 years of Town Twinning by visiting Wesel, Germany. This will be my first visit to Wesel, and I very much look forward to exploring the city and meeting Burgermeister Ulrike Westkamp.
Finally, the Town Council, at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 4 September, paid tribute and thanked Reverend Andrew Dotchin who is leaving Felixstowe. Reverend Dotchin has served the town diligently and was involved in many civic events. He showed the true spirit of Christian service by supporting the poor with his Parish Pantry open to all and free, and his giving a voice and being an advocate of the LGBTQIA+ community. Andrew will be greatly missed by the Felixstowe and the Town Council wish him well in his new Parish.
