From The Mayor

As autumn arrives, Felixstowe has once again demonstrated the pride, energy and community spirit that make our town such a special place to live. Recent events have celebrated achievement, supported local organisations and brought people together, with volunteers at the heart of them all.

A highlight was the Richard Bennett Coastal 10k, which attracted runners from across the region to our seafront route. It was inspiring to see participants supported by dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic spectators. It was an honour to present the awards and medals, and I thank everyone who made the event a success.

Felixstowe reaffirmed its commitment to Fairtrade through two community events with the Felixstowe Fairtrade Forum. Raising the Fairtrade flag in the Town Hall Gardens celebrated our dedication to ethical and sustainable trade, while the Fairtrade Family Fun Day at the library introduced these values to children through creative activities.

The town also supported skills, employment and wellbeing through a varied programme. The Job and Careers Fair connected people with employers, training providers and community groups. Meanwhile, the Edible Felixstowe Grow, Cook, Eat Festival at the Salvation Army promoted sustainability and healthy living. The Salvation Army also celebrated 140 years in Felixstowe with a special weekend of music, including performances by a UK-wide choir and the Felixstowe band.

Our community spirit extended to county events. The Suffolk Harvest Festival at St Edmundsbury Cathedral celebrated our agricultural heritage, while the Suffolk Justice Service Choral Evensong at Ipswich Minster offered a moment of reflection alongside the High Sheriff and fellow civic leaders. Cass and I were honoured to represent Felixstowe at both occasions.

Closer to home, the East Suffolk Disability Information Day at the Labour Club brought together organisations offering valuable advice and support to disabled people and their families.

I was also pleased to attend the Army Cadets’ open evening and the Sea Cadets’ annual inspection. The latter held particular personal significance, as Cass and I were both Sea Cadets before later serving as staff. It was wonderful to see the dedication of the cadets and their volunteer leaders.

Across all these events, one message stands out: volunteers are at the heart of Felixstowe. Their time, skills and enthusiasm sustain the activities, services and celebrations that make our town vibrant and welcoming.

Thank you to everyone who organises, volunteers, participates in or supports these events. Your contribution makes Felixstowe a town to be proud of.

Cllr Darren Aitchison

Mayor of Felixstowe
