Autumn leaves are on the trees, and winter is fast approaching. There is a lot to look forward to in Felixstowe. The Lions Club are busy working on the Christmas lights and, as with every year, they will be even busier when it comes time for putting them up.
I have recently been privileged to attend the AGM of several local community groups and have seen first-hand the work taking place in our community. Whether it’s the Felixstowe Sea Cadets, FACTS or the Carnival AGM, people are working together to give both young, and those a little older, opportunities whether it learning to sail or getting out to meet friends or putting on a very successful major event in our town.
Thank you to everyone who attended the recent Mayor’s Charity Quiz Night in support of St Phillip’s Community Hub and Felixstowe Opportunity Group, and made it a success. The upcoming charity event will be a Murder Mystery Evening, The Curious Case of the Waxwork Child, hosted on 8 November. Tickets can be booked at www.ticketebo.co.uk/mayors-charity-2025.
In the past months, I have attended the Fairtrade Family Fun day at the Felixstowe Library, the Grow, Cook , Eat Festival at Great Eastern Square and the celebration service for the Walton Parish Nursing – all of which are groups contributing to our great Felixstowe community. I was also welcomed on a visit to the QVSR Felixstowe Centre, where I heard all about how they support the seafarers that dock at the Port of Felixstowe.
In October, we were delighted to host the Wesel Scout Group in Felixstowe, and they enjoyed a breakfast at the Felixstowe Town Hall.
I also attended a civic visit to Wesel, where we said farewell to their retired Bürgermeisterin Ulrike Westkamp, who had been their Mayor for many years, and were pleased to meet the new Bürgermeister Rainer Benien, with whom we hope to continue our firm friendship in the coming years. We hope to see him in Felixstowe soon.
Our two twinning organisations, The Wesel Association and the Salzwedel Association in Felixstowe do an amazing job in fosterering and celebrating our twin town status. Their continuing work demonstrates that we have lots in common with our neighbours across the world.
As we now look towards the Christmas season, I am looking forward to visiting the residential homes in Felixstowe. I am also looking forward to the Christmas Day Dip, supporting St. Elizabeths Hospice. I will be braving the sea with all the other dippers!
Cllr Corrine Franklin
Mayor of Felixstowe
