Beside the Seaside Exhibition at Felixstowe Museum
Felixstowe Museum is excited to announce Beside the Seaside, which is the first exhibition at the Museum to chart Felixstowe’s story as one of the most fashionable resorts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, right up to the present. Opening on 4th April and running for two seasons, the exhibition will excite those with long memories of the resort, and those who continue to enjoy its charms today. Featuring loans from accredited museums and seafront businesses, the display will also contain interactive elements to make it engaging for visitors of all ages.
An exciting and nostalgic collection of amusements from the famous Mannings arcade forms one centrepiece to the exhibition, with gallopers, working penny machines, and a risqué ‘What the Butler Saw’! In contrast, Visitors books from grand seafront hotels, including one on loan from a private collection, contain doodles, sketches and signatures, including that of Winston Churchill! These objects and many more illustrate fascinating stories, such as Churchill’s impromptu stop in Felixstowe, the trial of Wallis Simpson, and the eccentric Felixstowe visionary Colonel Tomline.
Alongside Beside the Seaside and a range of other temporary displays, the Museum’s dozen rooms of permanent collections include archaeology, RAF Felixstowe, all aspects of local history, and much more. Children’s trails, our Beehive Café, and friendly volunteers make it a great day out, and Landguard Fort is just next door! Felixstowe Museum will be open Thursday-Sunday, 11.00-17.00, from 4th April.
