An Update from the MP for Suffolk Coastal

Jenny Riddell-Carpenter MP

Last month, you may have spotted that the signage on my office in Hamilton Road was installed – my team and I have been working from there for a few months now, and it’s very nearly ready to be opened. We have to wait for the full security measures to be installed, and once it is we will be advertising our opening hours. I’m delighted to have my office here in Felixstowe – I always knew that this was the place I would want to open my office, and its important to me that it is a visible and accessible office.

Aside from the office works, it’s been a busy month for me. I recently had the opportunity to visit Odesa, Ukraine, to attend the Black Sea Security Forum, which brought together global leaders and MPs from across Europe and beyond to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. It was also an important opportunity for me to visit the country, and to see the realities – and human impact – of war in Europe.

It was sobering. Visits to a village two hours outside of Odesa showed the impact that war has had – with the village almost destroyed by the Russian invasion. But it was equally inspiring to be reminded about how resilient people are. Rebuilding work is going on all around the city and the region, and new infrastructure is being built as we speak. Families are going about their lives – almost as normal – and its only at nighttime, when the military curfews are enforced and the air-raid sirens sounds, that you’re reminded this is a Country at war.

A few days before I left for Ukraine, I met with Ukrainians families living in Suffolk Coastal. They told me about their own stories and their worries for loved ones still living in Ukraine.
The day after I returned to the UK, the war escalated once again, and now Odesa is under attack once more. It’s a reminder of how fragile peace is, and how important it is that the UK and our allies continue to support the war efforts, and make sure that we do what we can to promote and protect peace in Europe.
Finally, I wanted to say thank you to all those who have showed huge support to Ukraine and Ukrainian families living here in Suffolk Coastal. I am incredibly proud of the support that our community has shown, and I know that the families I met with and spoke to feel a huge amount of gratitude and support from our community.
