I ’ve fired the starting gun on Felixstowe’s Town of Culture 2028 bid, because I’m proud of our Town, and think we need to take our place in the national competition.
Felixstowe is layered deep with history, arts, culture and a truly deep sense of community. We are the best of modern Britian – and I think we need to do more to show our town off.
The Government’s brand-new UK ‘Town of Culture’ competition, launched by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy, wants to celebrate towns across the UK – in the same way the City of Culture competition does for cities and larger towns. But this is our turn. This is our chance to show that smaller towns like Felixstowe can pull a big punch with our offering, and that we too are proud of our culture, history and community. From the Landguard Fort, the Felixstowe Museum, to our summer Carnival and Parade that dates back over 100 years. From Beach Street, our majestic promenade and Seafront Gardens, to the Spa Pavilion – there is culture on every corner, and on every road in Felixstowe.
And our arts are phenomenal. Throw a pebble in Felixstowe and you’ll hit an artist (though please don’t!) and the creative juices flowing out of Level 2 need to be seen and heard to be believed.
I know this town is special. And I want us to take our offering to the national competition – which is why I’ve fired the starting gun, and kicked off Felixstowe joining the competition.
The winning town will receive £3.5 million to deliver a cultural programme during summer 2028, showcasing what makes it special. But even shortlisted towns will receive £60,000 to shape a full bid — meaning the benefits start long before any title is awarded.
Felixstowe shouldn’t sit quietly on the sidelines. We should be proud of our town and make the case for who we are and what we can offer. Because this isn’t just a bid for a competition — it’s a bid for our future.
This is an exciting time for our town, with our Pride in Place funding, which was announced late last year, and will see the western end of Felixstowe receive £2million per year, every year for ten years, to help revitalise our streets and support our community – this is our moment. And I think 2026 will be our year.
