News from the Felixstowe BID

With Small Business Saturday behind us, I’d like to remind you that we shouldn’t need a themed day to encourage shopping local, but we should be looking to our high street before looking to our mouse and keyboard to shop for the everyday as well as more special items. Felixstowe is blessed with a rich mix of independents and chain stores, and when we shop locally, we are making more of an impact than you might think.
Here’s 5 reasons to think about before you think hit the ‘add to basket’ button.

1. Enhance Neighbourhood Character

Small businesses add unique character to our shopping, dining and leisure areas. They offer individual products and services and provide a balance to the necessity of our chain stores, enriching our town’s vibrancy and variety.

2. Keep Money in Your Community

For every £1 spent with local businesses, 63p stays in the community compared to 40p with larger businesses. If each resident spends £100 locally, approximately £2,079,000 stays in the community, enhancing local services and infrastructure. Shifting just 10% of spending to local businesses could create around 66 new jobs in our town.

3. Support Small Communities

Supporting local businesses in our small town helps these communities thrive. As traditional industries decline, local businesses become crucial for maintaining population and preserving the character of these areas.

4. Protect the Environment

Shopping locally reduces your carbon footprint. If each household (about 13,750 in our town) shifts 10% of their grocery shopping locally, the reduction in CO2 emissions from fewer long-distance trips could be significant, supporting environmental sustainability.

5. Build a Stronger Community

Local businesses are owned by our neighbours and friends, who reinvest in the community. In the UK, 76% of consumers believe shopping locally is essential. In our town, this equates to about 25,080 residents valuing and supporting local businesses, fostering a stronger, more connected community.
By shopping locally, you can significantly impact the local economy, environment, and community cohesion, ensuring a vibrant and sustainable future for our town, on top of that, it’s a great way to get out and meet people, chat with friends, and see what’s going on.
