Pens, Pencils, Architecture
An exhibition of architectural drawings by Iain Cochran Architects
To celebrate the launch of their new business in Felixstowe, Iain Cochran Architects are holding an exhibition of their architectural drawings in February and March this year.
The exhibition explores the design ethos of the practice, that successful building design starts with the basics; pens, pencils and paper. Of his design process Iain says; “For us, the best way to explore ideas is to draw them by hand. Quick sketches allow us to visualise ideas as they form, to consider the context of the building and to assess the merit of one design over another.”
Sam Wingate, Creative Director of the practice adds “Drawing also allows us to insert a little bit of humanity into the communication of our ideas. Sketches can be fun in a way in which more technical architectural drawings often are not, and there’s nothing wrong with a bit of fun in the buildings we live and work in.” Iain’s playful architectural drawings were last on display at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London.
Iain has set up the new practice having spent 17 years working at Hawkins Brown architects in London, where he was a Partner leading mixed use residential projects. He oversaw the development and construction of around two and a half thousand homes, including one of the largest Passivhaus schemes in the UK for Camden Council and many truly affordable homes for the Peabody Housing Association.
His new practice is open to projects of any size and they welcome enquiries from all.
Iain Cochran Architects is at 1a Bent Hill, Felixstowe, the former site of the much loved Leather Shop. The exhibition marks the launch of the practice following an extensive, and sensitive renovation that has aimed to keep the character of this prominent Edwardian shop front on the highstreet.
The exhibition is open daily from 10am – 4.30pm from 28th Feb – 7th March. Visitors are welcome to see the drawings and the renovated space.
