Landguard Family Days Out
Landguard is a brilliant place to spend school holidays with children of all ages. Nestled at the tip of Felixstowe, it combines history, hands-on learning and wild coastal nature into a single, easy-to-manage day out that’ll keep boredom at bay.
Landguard Fort where the kids can explore ramparts, tunnels, cannon emplacements over 400 years of history. The Fort’s immersive displays and family trails can turn history into a game, and you can always grab a drink and a bite to eat at the 40s themed Café when your feet need a rest.
Next door is Felixstowe Museum, a compact treasure trove of local stories. 14 rooms packed with exhibits about maritime life, archaeology and the local coastal community, learn how Felixstowe grew from a popular seaside resort to the commercial hub it became. Find out about seaplanes, paddle steamers and everything in between. If you need to take time out, grab some refreshment in the Beehive Café, home-made treats await you.
For a change of pace head to Landguard Nature Reserve. The reserve’s calm beach fronted beauty offer gentle walks and brilliant wildlife-watching opportunities. Children can learn to spot wildlife among the military remnants, and the reserve’s accessible paths make it easy for everyone to get about. Bring binoculars and a simple wildlife checklist and turn the walk into a mini-adventure.
Putting these three stops together makes for a balanced day: history and exploration in the morning, discovery and storytelling at the museum, and fresh-air nature time in the afternoon. There are 3 cafés to choose from (at the Fort, Museum and the View Point café) and benches dotted around, allowing you to go at your own pace to enjoy a whole day of adventure together
Whether you’re parents looking for a memorable school holiday outing or grandparents planning a special day with grandchildren, Landguard delivers variety, learning and fresh air. It’s an ideal plan to beat the school break boredom and create family memories that last long after the tide has turned. Plan to arrive early to find parking and make the most of quieter morning hours; finish with an ice cream by the seafront and a stroll along the promenade to round off a perfect family day.
