Corridor Care or Social Care – A No-Brainer By Peter Prinsley MP
I fully support the Prime Minister’s ambition to finally tackle the issue of social care, for too long an issue used to score political points to the detriment of our NHS, patients and their families.
When I was a registrar in 1988 the NHS had 300,000 beds. By the time I was a senior consultant in 2020 we had just 140,000.
Today, there are around 3,000 instances of corridor care happening each day as a result of pressures on hospital capacity, including discharge delays for those who ought to be in the social care system, not in hospital.
Last month, an average 13,600 people a day were stuck in hospital beds despite being medically fit to leave. Although I am proud that at our own West Suffolk Hospital corridor care does not happen, these two statistics alone illustrate just how important it is to finally tackle this problem head-on.
Standing Up For Our Chalk Streams
Having campaigned since I was first elected for the protection of our precious chalk streams and rivers, including the Lark and the Linnet, I am delighted to have helped establish a cross-party Parliamentary Group with the explicit aim of protecting our Chalk Streams, and to have been elected an officer of the group. The APPG on Chalk Streams will develop policy proposals to better care for, and restore our chalk streams.
Drought Declared as Anglian Water Boss Pockets £1.3m
First customers of Anglian Water were handed a hosepipe ban, and then, on the very day that the boss of Anglia Water was awarded a £1.3m bonus, a drought was declared. If you ever needed a clear example of why the current private ownership of Anglia Water is not working for residents, there it is.
Meanwhile, while Suffolk faces drought, record-breaking temperatures and devastating wildfires, Reform-run Suffolk County Council has chosen to scrap its Climate Emergency declaration.
I am grateful to the incredible firefighters who worked tirelessly to tackle the blaze at Dunwich.
New workplace temperature limit rules must be priority
Currently, there is no legislation in the UK protecting workers from extreme heat. As our climate warms, this needs to be addressed. So, as temperatures exceeded 35C I called for the Government to consider new legislation on a mandated upper temperature limit in the workplace, especially for those working outside.
St Edmundsbury Cathedral to be “Reborn” and more good news for town centres
I am delighted that St Edmundsbury Cathedral has been awarded a whopping £7m in National Lottery Funding to take forward its “Reborn Project” which aims to reunify the Abbey of St Edmund site, create a new visitor centre and apprenticeship opportunities.
In more good news, the Prime Minister’s decision to cut business rates for pubs, clubs and live music venues by an additional 20% will save our typical local pub an estimated £1,100 a year. And the Government’s recent announcement that new vape shops will require planning permission and councils will get more powers to block new betting shops will further improve our high streets.
