Bury Bach Choir

Bury Bach Choir has been making music since 1932 and continues to look for new music and for new singers to carry forward this mission.
The choir’s next concert on Saturday 9th November 2024 at 7.30pm in The Apex is guaranteed to be an exciting mix of the new and the old – familiar works by Gabriel Fauré (including the lyrical Cantique de Jean Racine) and two rarely performed works by Gustav and Imogen Holst.
The first of these, the Hymn of Jesus, by Gustav Holst of “Planets” fame, was first performed in 1920 and made such an impression that the audience called loudly (but unsuccessfully) for a second performance! Vaughan Williams said of it that he “wanted to get up and embrace everyone and then get drunk” and one prominent critic is reported to have said to Holst “If anybody doesn’t like it, he doesn’t like life”.
The second, the Mass in A minor, is by Holst’s daughter Imogen who was for many years joint artistic director of the Aldeburgh Festival. Holst’s is a beautiful and simple rendition of the Mass, described by the critic Geoffrey Norris as “immaculately crafted, betraying influences of her teachers Vaughan Williams, Howells and Dyson” and the choir will be singing unaccompanied for the first time in many years.
Joining the choir will be rising stars, United Strings of Europe, described by Jonathan Blumhofer as a “technically accomplished ensemble whose sheer skill level is evenly impressive”. USE will in the second half of the concert play Fauré’s string quartet in E minor and the evening’s conductor will be Benedict Collins Rice.
More information about the concert and how to book tickets can be found on the choir’s website www.burybachchoir.co.uk.
