Bury Bach Choir
It might seem a bit early to be thinking Easter but that is what the Bury Bach Choir is already doing with rehearsals well underway for the choir’s first ever performance of Bach’s St Mark Passion on Saturday 29th March.
Bach actually wrote five passions, but two of them were completely lost and the St Mark Passion only survived in outline form. The version that we shall be singing is however full of authentic Bach, as the composer frequently re-cycled his music, which has allowed editors Reinhard Keiser and A H Gomme to reconstruct the work with a great deal of confidence in its authenticity.
Once again, the choir will be singing at the Apex under the baton of Benedict Collins Rice, accompanied by the Geldart Ensemble and joined by four wonderful soloists – Hilary Cronin (soprano), Tom Lilburn (countertenor), Hugo Hymas (tenor) and Ben Noble (bass).
In Leipzig in 1731 when this work was first performed, sung versions of the Gospel story were an essential part of the city’s Easter preparation. In 21st Century Bury St Edmunds, you will find that Bach’s Markus-Passion has lost none of its narrative and emotional power.
Tickets are available from the Apex or via the Bury Bach Choir website www.burybachchoir.co.uk.
