Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides

Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides have been shortlisted among the top ten finalists for the Visit England Tourism Superstar award 2024. This recognises those
in the tourism industry who are passionate about their area of work and provide an unforgettable visitor experience, setting the standard for England’s tourism industry.

Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides shortlisted for VisitEngland Tourism Superstar Award

Sue Warren, Marketing Manager for the town’s official tourism brand Bury St Edmunds and Beyond, who nominated the Guides said, “Our Guides are the unsung heroes of our destination delivering tours to visitors since 1978. What they don’t know about Bury St Edmunds is not worth knowing.”
The winners of the annual competition will be revealed at the end of English Tourism Week, 15 – 24 March and will rely on the highest number of public votes cast through the VisitEngland website. Competition has been intense and to be in the top ten is a great achievement.

The Guides comprise a highly trained team of volunteers who have earned the right to wear the coveted Blue or Green Badge symbols of guiding excellence.
They run daily tours for UK and international visitors, ghost walks, tours for schools and journalists and orientation tours for new US Forces personnel. They have produced themed tours to celebrate the Abbey’s 1000 anniversary, a range of topical subjects, the latest being about wartime in Bury, entitled ‘Masters of the Air’.

Bury St Edmunds Tour Guides Inclusivity

Inclusivity is important and they have delivered tours and talks to groups with health conditions or impairments as well as those living with dementia and sight loss. These have extended to the needs of German students and carers from a boarding school for the physically impaired and members of Ukrainian families who have recently moved to the town. Sue added, ““We are so extraordinarily fortunate to have this special group of people in our town, very often the first people our visitors will encounter.” Some also volunteer at the Visitor Information Point in the St Edmundsbury Cathedral shop, a service staffed
solely by volunteers.

The Guides’ marketing officer, John Saunders said, “We are delighted to have become finalists. We take pride in showing visitors what a wonderful and interesting town we have here in Bury. To be recognised in the top ten superstars in England is a tremendous accolade and we hope that people will support us
when voting opens in February.”

Congratulating all the finalists, Visit England Director Andrew Stokes said: “We have the most wonderful people working in our industry and Tourism Superstar is about recognising those individuals who go the extra mile to make visitor experiences truly special.
