Letter from the Editor
Welcome to your new season Flyer. We hope September – and beyond – goes well for everyone in education and perhaps this could be the ideal time to participate in activities and events taking place this autumn?
You are invited to St Michael’s Church Tower on Windhill to meet their bellringers and perhaps try bellringing yourself (20th September). New ringers are always welcome. The upper levels of the tower will be open to adults and children over seven, so why not see the workings of the 200-year-old clock and climb to the top for a fantastic view? We also have a fascinating article from The Hundred Parishes Society and a reminder of the large range of free walking routes they have available to us all at: https://hundredparishes.org.uk/walks My family and I always enjoy these very informative and varied walks.
The Bishop’s Stortford Library tells us it will be closed from Monday 14th September to Friday 25th September for a minor refurbishment and its usual programme of regular activities will continue from the week beginning Monday 28th September. Don’t forget that their online services will be available throughout, why not give BorrowBox, PressReader and Libby a try? Where you can choose eBooks and eAudiobooks, newspapers and magazines to read. Before the closure there is a Sensory Storytime and an Island themed quiz at This N That.
In club and charity updates, Renée from Isabel Hospice shares the news that Isabel Hospice and Grove Cottage were invited by BSUS as their charities for the recent Ukulele Festival. They are extremely grateful for their continued support. RSPB Stort Valley has a number of events this month, including a sociable, local bird walk (24th September).
Bishop’s Stortford Running Club tells us about the 24 hour “Spitfire Scramble” relay race and highlights other events including the couch to 5k course in September. Bishop’s Stortford WI has several interest groups, including a Walking Group, and women over 18 years can come as a visitor for to up to three meetings, before deciding whether to join. We also hear from 1st St Michael’s Mead Scouts Group about the opportunities for children to join the group and that the group is looking for adult volunteers to help make these opportunities possible. No previous Scouting experience is required.
We have an insightful article from Cycle Stortford on ‘Give Stortford more travel choice’ and information from Stortford Youth Choirs about the launch of their Intermediate Choir for young people in Years 7 and 8.
Congratulations to local resident Patrick, a Bletchley Park veteran, who celebrated his 100th Birthday recently. His fellow Bishop’s Stortford U3A bridge group members presented Patrick with a birthday card, a personalised cake and a lovely buffet. All the clubs and groups I have mentioned would be delighted to welcome new members. Why not find out more inside?
Thank you very much to Cllr. Martin Adams, the Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford, for his update this time. Sounds like it has been a very busy summer! Local community events that the Mayor has attended include a recent gathering with Year 5 children at St Michael’s School where 15 pupils wrote letters detailing their concerns and ideas about the environment.
