Letter from the Editor

As we move gently into the autumn season, let’s hope the start of this new term goes well for everyone in education and for those starting or changing jobs or undertaking work or personal projects. There’s plenty of information, things to do and inspiration in your September Flyer, for this month and beyond.

The Tower Open Day at St Michael’s Church is on the 20th September, timed to coincide with the Bishop’s Stortford History Society’s ‘History Day’ to celebrate the Society’s 70th anniversary. We discover walks, talks, tours and children’s events at the Bishop’s Stortford Museum and that the town library is marking the International Day of Older People (1st October) at its This N That social group, with Reminiscence Collections and refreshments. This group runs on the first Wednesday of every month.

Do you enjoy being outside and active? The Friends of Castle Park are always looking for new members to volunteer for conservation and archaeology activities and there are regular free events in Castle Park which include the Park Run (you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate at this weekly 5k event) and Hertfordshire Health Walks led by trained volunteer leaders. The Hundred Parishes Society shares information about their extensive free walking routes plus Bishop’s Stortford town trails are available online or from the Tourist Information Centre. Heritage Open Days (12th – 21st September) are also taking place.

In charity news we hear from the DKMS Herts and Essex Volunteers Hub; it’s a year since the Bishop’s Stortford based hub began, raising awareness of stem cell donation and adding more potential donors to the global registers. It’s also Blood Cancer Awareness month. Their next local event is in September at the Herts and Essex Hospital. Hummingbird Cancer Support Group extends heartfelt thanks to the Takeley Fundraisers, who recently raised £1,145 at an afternoon tea event. Based at Great Hadham Country Club, Hummingbird Cancer Support Group offers support to anyone affected by cancer, including patients, carers, and loved ones.

The Bishop’s Stortford Ukulele Society recently played in Castle Park, which raised funds for Isabel Hospice and Grove Cottage. Plus, at a Sunshine Concert celebration, with tunes from the eight years that Susie has been joint musical director of the Herts and Soul Community Choir, the region of £1,200 has been raised for Isabel Hospice. Renée from the Hospice passes on thanks to everyone involved.

Company at Christmas in Bishop’s Stortford is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, dedicated volunteers host the Christmas lunch every year at the Methodist Church. We also discover that Holy Trinity Night Shelter in Bishop’s Stortford has been accommodating the homeless over the winter months for the past 10 years, do you want to help make a positive impact? All these charity and community groups would be pleased to hear from you.

Local club updates include swimming achievements from Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club members at the Peanuts League 2025; the opening of the new seven-rink artificial surface at the Bishop’s Stortford Bowling Club by the Mayor Cllr Richard Townsend and the results of a competitive summer show by members of the Herts and Essex Boundary Flower Club. Congratulations to all involved.

With a bumper section of school news as well, we hope you enjoy reading your Flyer and thank you for your support.

With best wishes
