As I write this welcome letter, I hope the summer has been going as well as possible and that we can enjoy a good start to early autumn. With a new term for those in education and many local groups now running a full programme of activities, you’ll find inspiration from the community updates in this issue, to take you through September and beyond.
If you enjoy walking and being outdoors (count me in on loving walking!) Hertfordshire Health Walks now have weekly walks at Castle Park and in Thorley. We hear from volunteer walks leader Steve about why he joined the walks and then became a volunteer; it’s very motivating to read. Also, perhaps combined with a local wander, you could visit St James church in Thorley on a Sunday afternoon in September? Homemade cake awaits you in their grounds!
Other things happening include the first Silent Book Club™ at The Oasis Lounge (Methodist Church). A monthly chance to read in peace with a donation-only cafe and an opportunity to socialise later if you’d like. The Oasis Lounge also holds a weekly Memory Café. Do you enjoy playing table tennis? There are opportunities to play with a local club. Plus, The Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is looking for new singers (there’s an open rehearsal in September) In addition, The Bishop’s Stortford Band has been allocated funding to deliver free group lessons for children and young adults. Plus, there are regular activities at your library, including free digital skills sessions. Why not find out more?
Other club and group news includes an inspiring update from Rotary on the results of the Bishop’s Stortford Rotary Young Chef for 2024. The winner, Yoanna, will go forward to represent Bishop’s Stortford at the District Rotary Young Chef competition. The Bishop’s Stortford Bowls Club share news of a special challenge match and a £2000 donation to the Stortford branch of Parkinson’s. Meanwhile two Bishop’s Stortford Swimming Club Masters recently represented Team GB at the European Aquatics Masters Championships with incredible results. We also discover activities organised by the Bishop’s Stortford u3a group (you can find monthly listings in the library and tourist information office) Additionally, the Air Cadets – 1096 (Bishop’s Stortford) Squadron – holds its next intake on the 30th September. You can find details about these groups in your magazine.
We hear from local charities, including a special family run event (10th anniversary of the original Billy’s Bright Star Charity Ball) which has raised over £3,200 for Isabel Hospice. Helping Herts is organising The Great Big Walk for Herts (28th September) with a range of routes, to support young people across Herts. Also, as they rebuild, Grove Cottage is reaching out to the community to help keep it a beacon of hope and support for current and future families. Plus, Home-Start Herts, who support families, has volunteer training dates at Bishop’s Stortford library (25th September and 23rd October). These charities would be grateful for support.
Plus, we have a dedicated feature about John Barfoot being honoured by the trustees of Bishop’s Stortford Community Transport CIO; the ‘founding father’ of the popular Stortford Shuttle community bus service run for the benefit of the community. You’ll also find school news. Do enjoy your issue and thank you to everyone who contributes to the Flyer, we appreciate your support.
With best wishes
