Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine October ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

Welcome to your October issue, packed with community information and activities. I hope we can all make the most of this time of year, with autumn colours on display. You can always get inspiration from The Hundred Parishes Society website for walking routes or discover a free Hertfordshire Health Walk. Plus, don’t forget that our clocks go back on Sunday 26th October; seems the year is flying by.

Things to do this month include events from Bishop’s Stortford library as part of ‘Get Online Week’. There is Tea and Tablets, where staff will offer advice about your devices (20th and 22nd October); Mini Taster Sessions (21st October) as well as an internet safety themed Storytime (23rd October) for children and a Theory Test Pro (23rd October) for budding young drivers. During the half term week there is a production of ‘Fairy Tale Courtroom’ by WLTC (25-26th October) at Northgate Primary School, and Isabel Hospice will be running raffles at these performances. We also hear about St James Friday Café located in the 16th century barn adjacent to the historic St James Church (do check the specific opening dates inside your Flyer, as it is not open every Friday).

In local group news we have a report from the 7th Bishop’s Stortford Guides, who are celebrating their 80th birthday. As part of their celebration the unit invites all past leaders and Guides to join them for a special party this month. In addition, Girlguiding Bishop’s Stortford is actively looking for adult volunteers and they would love to hear from you. The RSPB Stort Valley group updates us on its October events. Plus, in their current 40th year, we hear from the Bishop’s Stortford u3a. They have over 50 groups and there are no age restrictions, just that you are not in full-time employment.

Breathe Easy Bishop’s Stortford shares news about one of its recent meetings when Terry and Keith talked about home safety, scam prevention and other topics. OPALS (Older Peoples Assisted Living Service) is an organisation that attends venues throughout Hertfordshire spreading the word about activities and advice and it is hoped to stage an event next year in Bishop’s Stortford.

Charity news includes details about Isabel Hospice’s fundraising events – there’s a Jig Fest at the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church (8th November) with hundreds of jigsaws for sale; Christmas at the Manor in High Wych (12th November) and the Lights of Love Service in Bishop’s Stortford (30th November) and Sawbridgeworth (13th December).  All these charity and community groups would be pleased to hear from you. You can find out more about them inside your magazine.

We also have a special tribute from Renée Friend BEM, Ambassador at Isabel Hospice, about Norma Symonds. Within her tribute, Renée says that Norma “was a great supporter of Isabel Hospice, a charity she held close to her heart, she also helped set up the Food Bank, the Night Shelter and more recently Red Kite. Norma was Mayor on two occasions, also a District Councillor, where she helped promote businesses, supporting schools, organisations, our communities and many other local charities. Her energy and dedication to everyone in our communities was endless, Norma will be sorely missed by us all.” Do look inside for the full tribute.

We share back to school news in this autumn issue and hope you enjoy your Flyer. Thank you for your support.

With best wishes
