Letter from the Editor

It’s the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’ (Ode to Autumn by Keats) so let’s hope we get some sunny autumn days and can make the most of our current daylight hours, ahead of the clocks changing on the last Sunday in October. As always, you’ll find plenty of community updates and things to do in this issue.

Bishop’s Stortford Library

The Bishop’s Stortford library has updated us on some of its events, including a weekly teen book club (Saturdays), a monthly ‘This ‘n’ That’ cuppa, cake and chat (a Wednesday morning), a quiz night and a Move Yourself to Better Health session. Why not pop in and find out more? We also hear from the Bishop’s Stortford Camera Club, who welcome beginners and those experienced in photography to join the club. If you are interested in discovering more, they would be pleased to hear from you.

Other things to do include the Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia evening concert of musical fairytales (19th October) and with support from Arts in East Herts, the Sinfonia is also inviting the community to join its final rehearsal that same afternoon (the afternoon opportunity is a free session). Plus, following the official opening of Castle Park in early September, the Friends of Castle Park continue to run regular activities. Find out what’s coming up here: https://friendsofcastlepark.org Castle Park is also a location for free regular Herts Health Walks, led by trained volunteer health walk leaders, and there are other health walks nearby too.

Club and Groups Bishop’s Stortford October ’24

Additional club and group news includes the Stortford Canoe Club team winning the Stortford Hasler Marathon race, taking seven gold, five silver and four bronze medals. What a fantastic result. The 1096 (Bishop’s Stortford) Squadron Air Cadets have celebrated the achievements of their hardworking cadets at an awards evening and represented the armed forces at the 80th anniversary of D-Day – “an emotional event for all who attended”. We also hear from The Bishop’s Stortford History Society, they meet on the third Thursday of each month (from September to May) and have just published another book. Plus, Cycle Stortford highlight ‘back to school’ traffic congestion and their determined vision of a network of active travel routes to allow students to walk or cycle safely to their schools. You can find details about all these groups, and more, in your magazine.

Renée Friend from Isabel Hospice tells us that 11 year old Lucy, whose grandfather was cared for, and the family supported by Isabel Hospice last year, with school friends Maddie and Elissa, organised a cake sale outside her home to raise funds. Thanks to the support of family, neighbours and friends they raised £500.00. The charity has also shared another update – during October some local solicitors have agreed to donate will writing services to raise funds for Isabel Hospice. In addition, Hummingbird Cancer Support Group highlight their compassionate care and emotional support to those facing cancer at regular Monday sessions.

We’ve also received a fond ‘thank you and farewell’ from St James Thorley to Reverend Dr Claire Finlay as she moves to pastures new. There’s plenty of school news in this issue too. Thank you for your support; we hope you enjoy your October Flyer.

With best wishes
