Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine November ’25 | Free Magazine Welcome

Letter from the Editor

As I write your November welcome letter it hardly seems possible that we are this far through the year. In this issue you’ll find a range of local community updates and information about festive/ winter events. Plus, if you’re interested in making the most of the outdoors, we have many parks, open spaces and riverside locations on our doorstep to explore, perhaps still with a chance to catch some late autumn colours!

Events include the Christmas Fayre in Bishop’s Stortford (6th December) with a wide variety of stalls, music and entertainment and Santa will be popping by to say Merry Christmas. There will definitely be something for everyone at this special annual event. You can also find out more about other local events by visiting the Town Council’s website: https://www.bishopsstortfordtc.gov.uk/events

An author event is happening at Bishop’s Stortford library with historical crime writer, Rory Clements. As well as an opportunity to hear from the author, there will be a chance to ask questions. So, why not call in and find out more about this and the many other library activities that take place?

On a musical note, Bishop’s Stortford Choral Society is joining forces with the Bishop’s Stortford Sinfonia (6th December) to put on ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ by Sir Karl Jenkins. You can find out more and book tickets here: www.singwithbscs.org.uk You can read about opportunities to join Hertfordshire Health Walks, in Bishop’s Stortford and nearby, in this issue. There’s a regular programme of free, friendly walks from a range of locations – which includes a gentle walk from outside the Herts & Essex Hospital – and all walks are led by trained volunteer leaders.

In local group news Cycle Stortford shares information on recent developments that have been positive for cycling and active travel. The group also says that we need to see urgent progress on additional schemes and better active travel links into Stortford from surrounding towns and villages such as Stansted, Takeley and Sawbridgeworth. Additionally, we hear from the Bishop’s Stortford Camera Club, who have visiting speakers, competitions and hands-on learning workshops, as well as trips out. They tell us you’re welcome to visit for free, for a couple of sessions, to see if the club suits you.

Charity and community updates include an appeal from The Bishop’s Stortford & District Talking Newspaper, for volunteers to join its team producing a free weekly audio recording of local news for the visually and physically impaired. The newspaper is currently celebrating its 45th anniversary. Plus, there’s a Jig Fest at the Bishop’s Stortford Methodist Church (raising funds for the church and Isabel Hospice) and an update from Renée Friend BEM, Ambassador for Isabel Hospice, that over £600 was raised during the recent Bishop’s Stortford Choral Festival. Renée said: “We are extremely grateful for the continued support of both the Harmonaires and Herts and Soul Choirs, and our local communities which enable us to continue to provide free care and support to patients and their families, both locally and throughout East Hertfordshire.”

You can find out about all these events, groups and charities, as well as primary and secondary school news which includes Sheryl’s 30 year anniversary at Thorn Grove Primary school, inside your issue. Thank you for your support and I hope you enjoy your Flyer.

With best wishes
