Letter from the Editor

It’s lovely to write this letter knowing longer days will continue to stretch out in front of us for some time. I hope you’ll be able to make the most of this time of year. My family and I enjoy springtime walks and, no doubt, I’ll be taking some photos along the way! If you’re looking for walk route ideas why not visit The Hundred Parishes Society and the Hertfordshire Health Walks websites?

Your May issue has all the usual local events and community news, to keep you informed up to and beyond the half term week. The Bishop’s Stortford library has a wide choice of events, including activities related to Local History Month and a talk from Tim at the Bishop’s Stortford Local History Society (21st May); a drop in children’s event (30th May) and a mystery Photo Trail.

Fundraising events include the Isabel Hospice annual charity Garden Party in the private gardens of David and Suzy Harvey DLL, at Wickham Hall (30th May), with music, stalls and a raffle. Tickets (£5.00) are available at the gate and includes tea and home baked cake! Then the Cards for Bravery Bravery Ball (7th June), marking the 10th anniversary of Cards for Bravery, will take place. They’ve supported thousands of hospitalised and seriously ill children and young people with handmade cards, activity packs, and bravery packages. Tickets are available at www.cardsforbravery.com/braveryball Sounds like they will both be lovely occasions.

Club and Group news includes a report from Bishop’s Stortford Bowling Club president Neal Harrington who represented Disability Bowls England with a victorious result. The Rotary Club of Bishop’s Stortford updates us on the annual Inter-Schools Quiz, sounded an interesting and rewarding event, and we also hear from The Bishop’s Stortford Breathe Easy Group – a friendly and supportive group which can give advice to help you understand more about your lung condition. All these groups would welcome you getting in touch, if you’d like to find out more and get involved.

Local charity updates include an article from the Food Bank in Bishop’s Stortford. They recently invited representatives from local community agencies to visit. Helen Kenny, the manager, talked to the visitors about the work that the Food Bank does in East Herts and about the process for making referrals for support. Also, Chair of Trustees, Jim Tatchell, encouraged everyone to maintain public pressure on local and national government, in order to achieve a situation where adequate and nutritious food is affordable to all, without the need for charitable food. Plus, the Hummingbird Cancer Support Group continues to provide a space of support for those affected by cancer at their new location of Great Hadham Golf Club. They meet every Monday, offering emotional support and holistic therapies to cancer patients and their families. These charities would be pleased to hear from you and to receive your support.

Renée Friend BEM, from Isabel Hospice, has also told us that she recently attended a presentation evening by Lord Lieutenant Robert Vossey, alongside five other Hertfordshire BEM recipients and their guests (as well as other attendees). “It was an honour to meet so many amazing and inspirational people, listening to their achievements was quite humbling…I can still hardly believe it all happened. I am still quite overwhelmed.”

Thank you for all your support and I hope you enjoy this month’s issue.

With best wishes
