Bishop’s Stortford Flyer Magazine May ’24 | Free Magazine Welcome
Letter from the Editor
It’s such a nice thought that, as I welcome you to our May issue, we’ll be experiencing ever lengthening daylight for the next two months. I’ve already seen a few early butterflies in fact!
We hope you’ll feel inspired and informed after you’ve read your May issue of the Flyer. Please do feel free to spread the word to others, we’re always keen for as many people as possible to read the community content we include each time.
Do you have an interest in gardening and growing? The Thorley Street Allotments were officially opened recently and the town council would be pleased to hear from you if you’d like to know more about these or any other of their allotments.
The town library has events to celebrate National Local History Month during May and a half term Potty Potions! event for children (30th May). The Arts Society of Bishop’s Stortford has a talk on “The Housekeeper’s Tale: The women who really ran the English Country House” (14th May), sounds intriguing and visitors are welcome. RSPB Stort Valley events include a visit to an Essex Wildlife Trust Reserve (18th May) and a walk to see the Thorley Wash reserve and the River Stort (22nd May). Plus, with a number of new volunteer walk leaders ready to welcome you, find out about Herts Health Walks in Bishop’s Stortford and nearby.
As well as local events we share some club news. Andrew Mulvey, the current Manager of Bishop’s Stortford Squash and Racketball Club, is closing his tenure at the Silver Leys site and his son Club No.1 player Nick Mulvey will be his replacement. Stortford Taekwon-do recently took 12 students to the Midlands Championships and Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were achieved; fantastic results. We also find out that husband and wife Jay and Michelle Hasty are the first members of Bishop’s Stortford Running Club to complete the six World Marathon Majors and earn the coveted six-star medal, by recently completing the Tokyo Marathon. It’s incredibly inspiring to read.
Renee Friend from Isabel Hospice shares fundraising updates with us. She says that the eastern Hertfordshire community came together in a remarkable display of generosity to enable the Isabel Hospice Care campaign to hit the £120,000 fundraising goal to support their vital palliative care services. Isabel Hospice volunteers also recently ran raffles at productions of Jeffrey Archer’s Beyond Reasonable Doubt and with WLT cast and crew and theatre goers support, over £800 was raised. In addition, Helping Herts, the official charity of Stort Valley Rotary, have celebrated a significant milestone with the handover of cheques, totalling nearly £300,000, to their 12 charity partners. Such incredible results and these charities would be delighted to tell you more about what they do.
